더메이킹스(The Makings)가 제작한 2015년 개정 영어 다락원(김길중) 3과의 지문입니다.
1번 지문
Look at the picture of the bicycle helmet. It was destroyed due to the actions of its careless rider. Andy Dappen was trying to do a jump with his bike, but he lost his balance and was thrown from his bike and landed on his head. Despite hitting his head on the ground and having his helmet break into pieces, Dappen was barely injured. In fact, he walked away with just a few scratches and bruises thanks largely to his helmet. What happened to Dappen should teach many people two of the most important lessons when it comes to cycling: don’t be too adventurous and always wear protective gear. Even though it is fun to ride a bicycle, however good you are at it, you can get seriously hurt if you don’t care about your safety. Before you head out for a bike ride, it’s important to learn some of the rules of the road.
2번 지문
If you’re riding on the road, behave like a car. Perhaps the main reason why there is so much dislike between drivers and cyclists is that many cyclists take liberties with their bicycles by ignoring traffic lights and switching between the road and sidewalk. This is dangerous and silly. Cyclists must follow the same rules that apply to cars. This means riding in the same direction as traffic, stopping at all stop signs and lights, and yielding to pedestrians.
You should know how to properly pass and be passed. If you’re riding on a popular bike route, try to ride straight and do not move back and forth too much. Faster cyclists might want to pass you. If you need to pass someone, pull up behind that person and say, “On your left.” Wait for the cyclist to pull to the right to allow you to pass. And always respond by saying, “Thank you.” Despite what you may hear, most cyclists are kind people and appreciate being thanked.
It’s also important to know how to ride when there’s no bike lane. When starting out, most cyclists prefer the safety of routes with a bike lane. But if you have to ride on the road, be careful of traffic. Be predictable so that cars know what to expect and stay as far to the right as safely possible. If there are a lot of rocks or the road is bad near the shoulder, don’t be afraid to ride inside the road, but again, be sure to ride in a straight line.
3번 지문
To be safe, be visible. It’s dangerous to ride a bike when you’re wearing a dark outfit that’s hard to see. Attach some tape that reflects light to your clothes. Put a light on the rear of your bike. Some drivers might not notice you on the road, so you should make an effort to become as visible as possible.
Before every ride, perform a 2-minute safety check. Check the wheels and the front and rear brakes. Gently drop your bike vertically and listen for any loose parts. If you aren’t sure what to listen for, ask someone at your local bike shop to show you. One safety check is all that separates a good ride from one ending with serious injuries.
Wear appropriate protective gear, especially a helmet. About two thirds of all deaths and one-third of all injuries from cycling involve the head and face. Wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of head injuries to cyclists by as much as 85 percent. Always wear a helmet when you ride a bike and make sure your helmet fits well.
4번 지문
Communicate.
Good communication skills can prevent accidents with other cyclists and drivers. Practice some common, useful hand signals before you start riding. Of course, you should first get used to riding your bike with one hand before using any hand signals. Take your time learning how to make some signals, and then you will be able to recognize easily when other cyclists are signaling, which will make your ride safer.
Hand Signals While Riding a Bike
Turn Left
The rider points left. Always look behind you before turning left, especially if you are merging into traffic before turning.
Turn Right
The rider points right. Again, do a quick check behind you to make sure no one is on your tail.
Move Over
Though cyclists are told to ride with traffic, pedestrians are safest when they move against traffic if they must be on the road. If you encounter a pedestrian, gesture to your fellow riders to move over so that they can avoid colliding with that person.
Stop
When you need to slow down to make a full stop, place your hand, palm turned out, on the small of your back.
Riding a bike is a convenient, eco-friendly, fast, and healthy method of transportation. But keep in mind that you need to follow the safety rules. The rules aren’t intended to keep you from having fun; they’re meant to keep you safe. Yes, cycling on the road can be risky, but the majority of accidents happen due to unsafe riding. Follow the rules and be a safe cyclist!
5번 지문
You’re at home when the floor begins moving back and forth. The shaking lasts for several seconds. You’re in an earthquake. Earthquakes are both dangerous and scaring. They kill and injure people and also destroy buildings. Fortunately, there are some ways you can keep yourself safe. First, don’t panic. Remain calm instead. Next, if you’re cooking, turn off the stove and put out any fires. In addition, get away from glass windows. Hide under a desk to protect yourself from falling objects. If you’re outdoors, move away from buildings and electric wires. Once the earthquake ends, see if anyone around you needs medical assistance. If you smell gas, contact the gas company to report a problem. Don’t light any fires either. If your building is damaged, go outside at once. Some buildings collapse after earthquakes finish. And if it’s not an emergency, don’t use the phone. Emergency responders need to make calls, but if people start calling their friends and relatives, the phone lines will go down.
