더메이킹스(The Makings)가 제작한 2015년 개정 영어 다락원(김길중) 6과의 지문입니다.

There once was a man wandering in remote places in old Korea. One evening, so the story goes, the man happened to take shelter in a farmer’s hut. He went to bed early but later awoke to the sound of low voices. It must have been the elderly mother and her daughter talking because there was no one else in that lonely place. Between them, a slow and steady exchange of spoken challenges was tossed back and forth continuously.
Curiosity made him listen to the words. He then became thrilled to find out what was going on. The two women were playing a game of baduk in the dark! Apparently lying side by side, they were playing the game by saying their moves out loud on an imaginary board in the dark. What powers of memory and calculation! The traveler had never encountered anybody as smart as these ladies.
Baduk is known as Go in the Western world. In the game of Go, players take turns placing black or white stones on the board as they compete to gain more territory. Despite its simple rules, Go is known to be quite elegant and complicated. A German lover of this oriental game once famously stated, “The rules of Go are so elegant and so logical. If intelligent forms of life existed in outer space, they’d almost certainly play Go.”
According to some calculations, there are more possible moves or combinations of moves in Go than there are atoms in the universe. The depth of the game has fascinated some modern computer scientists. They have dreamed of developing a machine brain that will play the board game well. In March 2016, Google arranged a demonstration Go match between AlphaGo and Lee Sedol, a Korean grandmaster. Lee is considered a rare Go genius while AlphaGo is an example of one of the newest artificial intelligence programs.

What is artificial intelligence, or AI, as it is often called? According to John McCarthy, one of the founders of AI and the man who created the term in 1956, it is “the science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs.” Intelligence is the core concept because computer science hopes to imitate human intelligence.
The human brain, the base of human intelligence, has close to 100 billion nerve cells, called neurons. Each neuron is connected to thousands of others, creating a neural network that constantly moves information in and out of the brain. Basically, AI follows the same pattern.
Another important feature of AI is machine learning. Just like children learn more as they grow, AI programs act in a similar manner. They are programmed to teach themselves and to learn in a variety of ways. One way includes pattern recognition. By observing patterns in data, AI programs can learn by themselves. This allows them to become more intelligent as they acquire more and more data.

These days, numerous AI programs of varying abilities have been developed. Some American police departments use the website called Coplink. It helps the police search criminal databases to find patterns of crimes. Another software product called True Face recognizes human faces by comparing video images to thousands of stored images. Similarly, speech recognition software is based on numerous patterns in languages.
What about AlphaGo? Like Coplink and True Face, it learns through pattern recognition. Its programmers apparently did an outstanding job as it defeated the Go grandmaster by a score of 4 to 1. In a mere 60 years, AI has made impressive advances. When artificial intelligence first acquired its name, it was nothing more than an idea in the minds of a few people. Today, AI programs are used in fields as diverse as medicine, business, and law, and the programs continue to improve in quality. Who knows what the next 60 years of AI have in store for humanity?

Jobs that seem strange today will be perfectly normal in the future. You won’t blink an eye if someone says he’s a robot counselor a decade from now. Some futurists decided to imagine a job fair in 2030. These are some jobs they thought of.
District Watch Officer
In the future, drones will be everywhere. People with this job will watch flocks of drones to make sure they aren’t doing anything suspicious. It’s likely that criminals will use drones, so there may be conflicts involving them.
Robot Counselor
There will be all kinds of robots in the future. Robot counselors will help people determine which robots are the best for them. If a newly purchased robot isn’t working out, a robot counselor will provide assistance.
Simplicity Expert
The world is becoming very complicated. People like simplicity experts will help people sail through the mass of confusion. They’ll unify business operations and make people’s lives easier for them.
Garbage Designer
There will be a big demand for them since upcycling is becoming popular. They will think of ways to transform manufactured products into new items. They will also ensure that products get reused or recycled when they are no longer used.
