Hei. That’s the way we say hello here. One more time: Hei! I’m Nicholai from Svalbard, Norway. I attend the northernmost school in the world. It’s August, but we wear our winter clothes when we go to school. The surrounding mountains are covered with snow, and the thermometer barely rises above freezing. Reindeer walk everywhere while a stuffed polar bear stands inside the school. The land around Svalbard is barren. There are neither tall trees nor insects, and there are fewer kinds of animals than in temperate zones. Students over the age of 16 take a survival course in which they are taught how to behave in nature, how to escape from polar bears, how to survive in winter, how to find safe places to camp, and how to deal with avalanches. My school is very multicultural. People have come here to work from different countries like Russia, Thailand, and Chile. And the school provides an education for their children. I am quite happy to be in a culturally diverse environment with my international friends.

ello! I’m Julie from Alice Springs, the Northern Territory of Australia, commonly known as the Outback. Australia is a huge continent, and many people live in geographically isolated areas. The School of the Air is one of the means by which students in remote communities can learn. How do we learn at the School of the Air? We take classes from teachers in studios who give us lessons on the interactive satellite network. The teachers use a video camera and an electronic whiteboard for their classes. We can watch and respond in real time via a web camera attached to our computer. We study this way for at least half an hour per week for each subject in which we are enrolled. We spend the rest of our time working through the assigned materials with a parent, an older sibling, or a tutor. Previously, we received our course materials and returned our written work to the education center by using the postal service. However, the expansion of Internet service into the Outback now enables faster and more effective reviews of each student’s homework. Learning is always fun. Using modern technology makes learning very special.

Hola! My name is Diego. I live in a small village in Ecuador called Mondana. It’s located in the Amazon Rainforest, which is often called the “lungs of the world” because it plays such an important role in maintaining the climate and air of the world. Life in the Amazon is changing quickly. A few years ago, a road was built across the river from the school, so now we can go to school by bus. Before the road was made, we went to school by boat, which made the journey very difficult. However, this kind of development can result in the destruction of the rainforest. People say it’s not easy to find a balance between development and conservation. My school specializes in ecotourism. Learning doesn’t take place only in the classroom. We also learn through a practice-based approach. We learn about sustainable agriculture. We take care of animals, do organic farming, and do maintenance work around the school. After we graduate, many of us work in Ecuador’s ecotourism industry. As for me, I want to work as an ecotour guide. It will be a rewarding job!

Johm riab sua! I’m Vandy from Cambodia. I live in a house on Tonle Sap Lake, and my school floats on a river! In the dry season, I walk for 30 minutes to get to school, but when the rainy season comes, I travel to school by boat like many of my classmates. To make rowing easier, several students take a boat together. While few of my classmates can ride a bicycle, everyone is a skilled swimmer. When school is out, we often join our fathers to cast nets and to go fishing for our families. Many people here make a living from fishing. We can play basketball at my school. You are probably wondering how that is possible. The secret is that there are rails all around the area where we play, so the ball and kids will stay out of the water no matter what happens.
