1번 지문
Our civilization is the sum of all the knowledge and memories passed on to us from the generations that have come before us. Naturally, it is almost impossible for anyone to fully appreciate all the riches of human achievement. You can only hope for a better degree of culture and enlightenment. To that end, the best way to accomplish this is to read books. Nothing can take the place of reading. Living in an age of high technology, some people may think that visual images on a screen do what books did in the past. It is true that images have the immediate power to show and tell things. However, books are unique in their power to enlighten people and to help them form general ideas. Movies are made to tell stories, but they are like spoken words and do not last. Good books endure and remain lifelong companions.

Renaissance author Montaigne once talked about the three things that guided his life: love, friendship, and books. In fact, all three are practically the same. You can love your books as you love your friends. Sometimes you might even say that your books sound wittier or wiser than the people you know. This happens because writers often try their best when writing their books. When you encounter a good book, you never finish discovering everything hidden in it. Books lead us out of ourselves into the world. To live is to experience the world. Without books, we would be seriously limited in our knowledge of other people and the world. Born into the vast world, we are perhaps made to feel lonely as individuals. We are also made to suffer because others suffer in the world, which often seems cold and full of injustice. At other times, we learn about people who experience the joy of life in the same world. Books guide us to travel all around the wide world with sympathy and understanding.
3번 지문
Books are doors to the minds of other people. We use them to escape from the narrow little world where we live brooding about our own lives. An evening spent reading a great book does for the mind what a vacation in the mountains does for the body. We come down from those lofty heights stronger, and our minds are cleaned of all impurities. Then, we feel ready to face the battles of daily life with greater courage. Books are a way to learn about the past, and they are the key to understanding social groups that we do not belong to. Garcia Lorca can teach me more about the soul of Spain than twenty trips to the country as a tourist can. Chekhov and Tolstoy have revealed to me aspects of the Russian soul which still exist today. Saint-Simon has made a France long dead come alive again just as Nathaniel Hawthorne and Mark Twain have helped me relive an America that has long vanished. My delight becomes even greater to discover that they are like each other despite the fact that they belonged to different worlds remote from us in time and space.

We read books to go beyond our own lives and to explore the world. The wonderful thing about books is that the reader is comfortably safe from the risks of actual adventures. In everyday life, we are often too involved in what is happening to see everything clearly. Sometimes we are too much under the sway of our emotions to appreciate them properly. As for the lives of the people around us, we are too shy to get involved in them. Some would make a novel worthy of Dickens or Balzac. We often fear what we seek, which is the pleasure of experience. A good writer gives us a faithful picture of life, which the reader appreciates without fear but with full commitment.
5번 지문
A reader of a good biography can enjoy peace of mind while reliving the life of value and adventures. In the words of George Santayana, "Art brings before our eyes what we cannot find in action: the union of life and peace." Reading history is enlightening. It teaches us the values of moderation and tolerance. Those disputes over which terrible wars were once fought have turned out to be mere disputes, dead and buried. We cannot help comparing the slight causes of wars with their horrible consequences. What a horrible gap between the two! We have yet to learn to be tolerant and wise. A great book never leaves the reader the same as before. The reader always becomes a better person after reading it.
6번 지문
Thanks to advances in technology and an abundant supply of energy, the civilization in which we live is becoming more focused on leisure. As such, people's work hours are being shortened and man's labor eased. However, too much leisure time could become a problem for many people unless they expand their tastes and interests at the same time. Aldous Huxley once said, "Every man who knows how to read has it in his power to magnify himself, to multiply the ways in which he exists, to make his life full, significant, and interesting." Full lives that have been enriched by the lives of others are what we should aspire to enjoy. Movies, television, and radio can entertain people, but they lack the profound and lasting effects of reading. They simply cannot provide the wide range of emotions and knowledge that books do.
