Wind is considered a clean source of renewable energy because it doesn’t pollute the air like coal and natural gas, which produce harmful byproducts and gas emissions. Another advantage is that wind power is cost-effective. The wind itself is free, so after setting up a turbine, there are low operational costs for wind power. And turbine prices have been dropping due to mass production and technology advancements. There are, however, some drawbacks. Local residents often complain that wind turbines are ugly and noisy. The turbines’ spinning blades can also kill birds and bats. And the wind is variable: On days when there is little wind, no electricity can be generated. Nevertheless, the wind energy industry is growing rapidly. Global efforts to combat climate change, such as the Paris Agreement, are accelerating this growth. Experts predict that more than one third of the world’s electricity will come from wind power by 2050.

Some scientists have warned that many species of mammals in the wild are likely to become extinct in the coming decades. The wild populations of certain species, such as the Bornean orangutan and the Sumatran rhino, have little chance of survival. Even the Asian elephant has been given only a 33% chance of making it through the next century. Experts believe that this extinction crisis will be so severe that it will take the Earth millions of years to regain its loss of mammal biodiversity. Large mammals are at greater risk due to their slower reproductive rates and smaller numbers of offspring. Once these species have been driven into extinction, there will be no way of bringing them back. They will have been wiped from the face of the planet forever. Their only chance of survival depends on human beings launching global conservation efforts to undo the harm that has already been done.

A woman named Sharon ran into an old friend after not seeing her for many years. Her friend had always been loud, funny and lively, but now she seemed quieter and more serious. After exchanging greetings, Sharon asked her friend how she’d been since they’d last seen each other. Her friend took a deep breath and said that the last five years had been a very difficult time for her. Without any warning, her young daughter had stopped breathing due to an allergic reaction to some medicine. The doctors had saved her life, but it was a long and difficult recovery. The two women hugged and just stood there crying for several minutes. Finally, Sharon told her friend, “I’m sorry. I had no idea.” “Don’t apologize,” she replied. “It feels so good to cry together with an old friend.”

Seawater contains an abundance of dissolved oxygen that all marine animals breathe to stay alive. It has long been established in physics that cold water holds more dissolved oxygen than warm water does ― this is one reason that cold polar seas are full of life while tropical oceans are blue, clear, and relatively poorly populated with living creatures. Thus, as global warming raises the temperature of marine waters, it is self-evident that the amount of dissolved oxygen will decrease. This is a worrisome and potentially disastrous consequence if allowed to continue to an ecosystem-threatening level. Now scientists have analyzed data indicating that the amount of dissolved oxygen in the oceans has been declining for more than a half century. The data show that the ocean oxygen level has been falling more rapidly than the corresponding rise in water temperature. Falling oxygen levels in water have the potential to impact the habitat of marine organisms worldwide and in recent years this has led to more frequent anoxic events that killed or displaced populations of fish, crabs, and many other organisms.
