British runner Roger Bannister set an impressive goal ─ to become the first person to run a mile in less than four minutes. Because he was studying to be a neurologist, Bannister didn’t have enough time for training. He knew he had better come up with a plan. He decided to use a simple 30-minute daily routine to prepare his body and to rely on his self-belief and vision. Bannister used to close his eyes and visualize every moment of the race. He could see the finish line, hear the cheering crowd, and feel himself making history. What separated Bannister from the other runners who had tried and failed was that he truly believed he could do it. He would even write “3:58” on a piece of paper and place it in his shoe before races. On May 6, 1954, all of Bannister’s mental preparation paid off. He ran a mile in 3:59.4, setting the world record.

Although Mars is currently cold and dry, scientists believe that it contained water in the distant past. A recent study on the impact craters found on the surface of Mars suggests it may have experienced a “mega tsunami” when a large meteor crashed into its ancient ocean. An impact crater known as Lomonosov strongly resembles the marine impact sites on Earth. The researchers believe that the Lomonosov crater must have been the place where the “mega tsunami,” which would have plowed across the surface of Mars, originated. They also suspect that a hole in the southern rim of the crater could have been the result of the ocean’s water rushing back from that direction. This, of course, is just a theory, as scientists still have found no proof that Mars once had an ocean. However, if it did, the Lomonosov crater could be in the place where the ocean was located.

Native Americans often sang and danced in preparation for launching an attack. The emotional and neurochemical excitement that resulted from this preparatory singing gave them stamina to carry out their attacks. What may have begun as an unconscious, uncontrolled act ― rushing their victims with singing and beating drums in a frenzy ― could have become a strategy as the victors saw firsthand the effect their actions had on those they were attacking. Although war dances risk warning an enemy of an upcoming attack, the arousal and synchronizing benefits for the attackers may compensate for the loss of surprise. Humans who sang, danced, and marched may have enjoyed a strong advantage on the battlefield as well as intimidated enemies who witnessed such a spectacle. Nineteenth-and twentieth-century Germans feared no one more than the Scots ― the bagpipes and drums were disturbing in their sheer loudness and visual spectacle.
