1번 지문
Like most people, you probably hate having insects in your home. If you decide to fight these insects with chemicals, you will probably end up losing. Each time we attack an insect species with a certain chemical, it responds by evolving defenses through natural selection. The more aggressively we attack it, the faster it evolves. In fact, insects can evolve much faster than we can react to their changes. Take the German cockroach, for example. It is one of the most hated household pests in the world. In 1948, people began to use an extremely toxic chemical called chlordane to kill it. In 1951, cockroaches collected from homes in Texas were tested. The researchers found that they were 100 times more resistant to chlordane than laboratory cockroaches. Again and again, our attempts to eliminate insects have simply made them immune to our pesticides.
2번 지문
Within the 36 OECD countries, more than half of adults and almost one out of every six children are either overweight or obese. The obesity epidemic has continued to spread over the past five years, although the pace is slower than before. What’s more, a wide variation in obesity and overweight rates can be seen across OECD countries. For example, the obesity rate of the United States is nearly 10 times as high as that of Japan. Many countries are now addressing the issue through policies that encourage people to make healthier choices. These include easier-to-understand food labels, public awareness campaigns, and stricter regulations on advertisements for unhealthy products, especially those aimed at children.
3번 지문
Humans already have a longer period of protected immaturity ─ a longer childhood ─ than any other species. Across species, a long childhood is correlated with an evolutionary strategy that depends on flexibility, intelligence, and learning. There is a developmental division of labor. Children get to learn freely about their particular environment without worrying about their own survival ─ caregivers look after that. Adults use what they learned as children to mate, hunt, and generally succeed as grown-ups in that environment. Children are the R&D (research and development) department of the human species. We grown-ups are production and marketing. We start out as brilliantly flexible but helpless and dependent babies, great at learning everything but terrible at doing just about anything. We end up as much less flexible but much more efficient and effective adults, not so good at learning but terrific at planning and acting.
