1번 지문
The red imported fire ant, native to South America, is already an invasive species in many parts of the world and may continue to spread to new regions in the near future. It is not only a threat to public safety due to its venomous sting, but also an agricultural pest that damages crops and interferes with vital farming activities. The venom from their stings creates a burning sensation, causes skin redness and swelling, and can even lead to death in extreme cases. The species is responsible for an estimated $6 billion in economic losses in the United States alone, and it also has a serious impact on the ecosystem. It not only reduces local native ant populations but also affects the interactions of other ant species on a larger scale. We must either work to eliminate this invasive species or face an ecological disaster.
2번 지문
Living creatures ─ both those with highly developed brains and those with less-developed brains ─ use habits to quickly respond to familiar events. This is convenient, as they allow us to perform tasks without focusing on them. For example, if we need to unlock a door as well as explain an important point to a companion, we can do both at the same time. The structure of the brain makes it possible for us to act without being fully aware of what we are doing. In other words, we are not always in control of our actions. This loss of control is intentional, for the creation of a habit is the brain’s way of reducing the cognitive energy it must expend. It takes many repetitions of a task to create a habit, but once a habit has been established, it is difficult to break. One of the defining qualities of habits is that they are resistant to extinction.
3번 지문
It would be hard to overstate how important meaningful work is to human beings ─ work that provides a sense of fulfillment and empowerment. Those who have found deeper meaning in their careers find their days much more energizing and satisfying, and count their employment as one of their greatest sources of joy and pride. Sonya Lyubomirsky, professor of psychology at the University of California, has conducted numerous workplace studies showing that when people are more fulfilled on the job, they not only produce higher quality work and a greater output, but also generally earn higher incomes. Those most satisfied with their work are also much more likely to be happier with their lives overall. For her book Happiness at Work, researcher Jessica Pryce-Jones conducted a study of 3,000 workers in seventy-nine countries, finding that those who took greater satisfaction from their work were 150 percent more likely to have a happier life overall.
