1번 지문
In front of a five-year-old boy was a marshmallow. He had been told to wait 15 minutes before eating it. If he did, he would be given a second marshmallow. If he did not wait, there would be no second marshmallow. Fourteen years later, the children who had been patient enough to wait 15 minutes had better grades and were more socially successful than the children who ate the marshmallow right away. Some people believed the results of this experiment were related to self-control. However, there were many other factors that may have affected the children’s behavior. For example, children who grew up dealing with poverty and abuse may not have believed that they really would have been given a second marshmallow had they waited. In their case, a lack of trust may have been responsible for their behavior, rather than a lack of self-control.
2번 지문
Driving while distracted by a smartphone is considered to be just as dangerous as driving while drunk. Fortunately, stricter law enforcement and higher public awareness have helped reduce accidents related to this unsafe behavior. Meanwhile, however, accidents caused by using a smartphone while walking have been increasing more rapidly than ever. More and more pedestrians, especially younger people, are sending text messages, listening to music, and checking their social media pages while they walk. Some cities, such as Fort Lee, New Jersey, have passed laws that fine people who walk and use their smartphones at the same time. As a result, this risky behavior did decrease dramatically. Even if your city doesn’t have any similar laws yet, you should think twice before looking down at your smartphone while walking. After all, it is convenience, not danger, that we want to get from these devices.
3번 지문
To find the hidden potential in teams, instead of brainstorming, we're better off shifting to a process called brainwriting. The initial steps are solo. You start by asking everyone to generate ideas separately. Next, you pool them and share them anonymously among the group. To preserve independent judgment, each member evaluates them on their own. Only then does the team come together to select and refine the most promising options. By developing and assessing ideas individually before choosing and elaborating them, teams can surface and advance possibilities that might not get attention otherwise. This brainwriting process makes sure that all ideas are brought to the table and all voices are brought into the conversation. It is especially effective in groups that struggle to achieve collective intelligence.
