A common but incorrect assumption is that we are creatures of reason when, in fact, we are creatures of both reason and emotion. We cannot get by on reason alone since any reason always eventually leads to a feeling. Should I get a wholegrain cereal or a chocolate cereal? I can list all the reasons I want, but the reasons have to be based on something. For example, if my goal is to eat healthy, I can choose the wholegrain cereal, but what is my reason for wanting to be healthy? I can list more and more reasons such as wanting to live longer, spending more quality time with loved ones, etc., but what are the reasons for those reasons? You should be able to see by now that reasons are ultimately based on non‑reason such as values, feelings, or emotions. These deep‑seated values, feelings, and emotions we have are rarely a result of reasoning, but can certainly be influenced by reasoning. We have values, feelings, and emotions before we begin to reason and long before we begin to reason effectively.

Artificial intelligence has become part of our daily lives. These days it helps us decide what items to buy, what food to eat, and what music to listen to. By recommending different options based on our past behavior, it makes our lives easier. But what if it stopped helping with our decision-making and instead started deciding whether we were guilty of a crime? In 2019 researchers created an AI program that acts like a real judge ─ it analyzes past cases and makes its own decisions. So far, it has been 79% accurate in 584 cases when compared to the decisions of real judges. If the judges or courts remain consistent in their decision that they make, their behavior can be translated into mathematical form and used to predict future decisions of the same judges or courts with a high degree of reliability.

To improve your chances of success, you must maximize your best skills. This is exactly what director James Cameron has done. He started in the movie industry in 1981 as the production designer and second-unit director for the film Galaxy of Terror. He had originally considered himself a screenwriter, but this experience taught him that his real talent was related to special effects. So he wrote a simple screenplay with a straightforward narrative and focused on the visual aspects of the film. This enabled him to create cutting-edge special effects and push the boundaries of filmmaking technology. His later movies, including Titanic (1997) and Avatar (2009), featured digital effects never before seen on movie screens. Cameron’s life-altering realization is a reminder that success often involves finding what you are good at and focusing on it.

Generally, fear is viewed as a negative force. However, some activities that are considered scary, such as watching a horror movie or riding a roller coaster, cause us to experience fun and fulfillment. So why do we get pleasure from certain things that scare us? Part of it is the natural high they create, which comes from the activation of our flight-or-fight response in a safe environment. Because we understand that we’re not actually in danger, we can relax and enjoy the feelings we get from the endorphin and dopamine released by our brains. These chemicals help us deal with dangerous situations, but they can also make us feel excited and happy. Another reason we’re attracted to an extreme adventure is that we want to test our courage. After we’ve finished sky-diving, we have a sense of accomplishment ─ we have faced our fears and survived.

Adults are able to predict the behavior of others. For example, they can predict that a person who reaches for a glass is going to drink something. Now, social scientists are discovering that very young children have this same ability. Some developmental psychologists did an experiment to find out when and how babies acquire this skill. They showed babies a video in which a woman reached for toys. Then they showed the same babies another video of a woman doing the same thing. However, the second video paused just as she began to reach, and during the pause the psychologists tracked the movement of the babies’ eyes. Surprisingly, even those as young as 8 months were able to predict how the woman would move. This ability is believed to be important to development because understanding other people’s actions helps babies recognize social cues.

Why do people in the Mediterranean live longer and have a lower incidence of disease? Some people say it’s because of what they eat. Their diet is full of fresh fruits, fish, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts. Individuals in these cultures drink red wine and use great amounts of olive oil. Why is that food pattern healthy? One reason is that they are eating a palette of colors. More and more research is surfacing that shows us the benefits of the thousands of colorful “phytochemicals” (phyto=plant) that exist in foods. These healthful, non-nutritive compounds in plants provide color and function to the plant and add to the health of the human body. Each color connects to a particular compound that serves a specific function in the body. For example, if you don’t eat purple foods, you are probably missing out on anthocyanins, important brain protection compounds. Similarly, if you avoid green-colored foods, you may be lacking chlorophyll, a plant antioxidant that guards your cells from damage.
