In Western society, many music performance settings make a clear distinction between performers and audience members: the performers are the "doers" and those in the audience take a decidedly passive role. The performance space itself may further reinforce the distinction with a physical separation between the stage and audience seating. Perhaps because this distinction is so common, audiences seem to greatly value opportunities to have special "access" to performers that affords understanding about performers' style of music. Some performing musicians have won great approval by regularly incorporating "audience participation" into their concerts. Whether by leading a sing-along activity or teaching a rhythm to be clapped at certain points, including audience members in the music making can boost the level of engagement and enjoyment for all involved. Performers who are uncomfortable leading audience participation can still connect with the audience simply by giving a special glimpse of the performer perspective. It is quite common in classical music to provide audiences with program notes. Typically, this text in a program gives background information about pieces of music being performed and perhaps biographical information about historically significant composers. What may be of more interest to audience members is background information about the very performers who are onstage, including an explanation of why they have chosen the music they are presenting. Such insight can make audience members feel close to the musicians onstage, both metaphorically and emotionally. This connection will likely enhance the expressive and communicative experience.

Pain is the body's reaction to damage. Although the damage itself occurs on the body, our perception of the pain occurs in the brain. In an experiment, scientists placed a small patch on volunteers arms. The patch would grow hot enough to deliver about the same amount of pain as holding a cup of hot coffee. The volunteers were shown two kinds of shapes on a screen: one warned that the pain would be quite bad, while the other signaled that the pain would be mild. They were asked to rate how much they thought the pain would hurt before it occurred, and then how much the pain actually had hurt after. The whole time, the volunteers were lying inside an MRI machine, which showed how active different parts of their brains were when they experienced the pain. When volunteers saw the shape that suggested the pain would be bad, they rated the heat as quite painful. When they saw the shape that suggested it would more bearable, they rated it as less painful. The MRI scans showed a similar pattern, despite the fact that patch's temperature was the same for every participant. This shows that the reaction of the participants was based on what they expected. The results of this study are not only interesting but also useful. Although pain is real and can't be avoided entirely, doctors may be able to lessen the amount felt by patients by adjusting their expectations.

Today's six-sided dice are made by machines. Since they are all exactly the same shape, we expect them to be "fair." In other words, when we roll them, each of the six numbers has the same probability of landing facing up. Roman dice did have something in common with modern dice ─ their numbers were arranged the same way. If you looked at any two opposite sides, their numbers added up to seven. Unlike today's cubes, however, Roman dice were irregular in shape. The Romans may have liked these dice because it was easier to manipulate them to make a certain number come up. Also, it seems that they believed fate determined which number appeared, not probability. Around 1100 AD, dice became more standardized in Europe. This was probably done to prevent gamblers from using unfair dice. The dice also got smaller, and the arrangement of their numbers changed. One and two were opposite, as were three and four, and five and six: The sets each added up to a different prime number. Around 1450, dice switched back to the "sevens" system of ancient Rome. They became more symmetrical, probably due to advances in the field of mathematics during the Renaissance period. The evolving shape of dice may seem unimportant, but it is very useful to archaeologists and historians. For example, when ancient dice are discovered, their characteristics can be used to determine how old the archaeological site is.

Gaslighting is a term referring to emotionally and mentally abusive behavior designed to make people doubt their own perception of reality. The term derives from a play in which a man tries to drive his wife insane. He constantly changes the lighting in their home. When she notices the changes, he then denies that it is different. Over time, the wife begins to doubt everything she believed was true. Because she can no longer trust her own view of reality, she must depend on her husband for everything. Gaslighting is a form of abuse used to exhibit power over the other person in a relationship. Like many kinds of abuse, it usually starts off small and then gradually gets worse. When the other person begins to feel unsure about his or her own abilities, the abuser gains power. This type of behavior is often used to trick people into staying in a relationship they have been thinking about leaving. Although gaslighting may sound shocking and extreme, a fairly large portion of the population has used it. In many cases of mild gaslighting, however, people are actually unaware of their own manipulative behavior. Parents, for example, may sometimes use gaslighting on their own kids to divert unwanted behavior, such as bad eating habits. Although no intentional harm is caused to the child, it is still gaslighting.

In each round of genome copying in our body, there is still about a 70 percent chance that at least one pair of chromosomes will have an error. With each round of genome copying, errors accumulate. This is similar to alterations in medieval books. Each time a copy was made by hand, some changes were introduced accidentally; as changes stacked up, the copies may have acquired meanings at variance with the original. Similarly, genomes that have undergone more copying processes will have gathered more mistakes. To make things worse, mutations may damage genes responsible for error checking and repair of genomes, further accelerating the introduction of mutations. Most genome mutations do not have any noticeable effects. It is just like changing the i for a y in "kingdom" would not distort the word's readability. But sometimes a mutation to a human gene results in, for example, an eye whose iris is of two different colors. Similarly, almost everyone has birthmarks, which are due to mutations that occurred as our body's cells multiplied to form skin. If mutations are changes to the genome of one particular cell, how can a patch of cells in an iris or a whole patch of skin, consisting of many individual cells, be affected simultaneously? The answer lies in the cell lineage, the developmental history of a tissue from particular cells through to their fully differentiated state. If the mutation occurred early on in the lineage of the developing iris, then all cells in that patch have inherited that change.
