Last month my friend Jason and I decided to go camping at a lake deep in the woods. We spent the day out on the lake, fishing for trout. We couldn't believe our luck ─ we pulled fish after fish onto the boat, each one bigger than the one before. Once we had caught the legal limit, we headed back to shore and started a campfire. There's nothing more delicious than fresh trout roasted over an open fire. As we ate, the sun went down. That's when Jason started telling ghost stories. Jason is a great storyteller, but sometimes his stories are too realistic. As he talked about a devil dog that roamed the woods at night, my heart began to pound in my chest. The idea of an evil dog was just too horrible. Just then, a dog began to bark in the darkness.

Physical education classes are important because they provide students with the opportunity to exercise regularly. They include activities that raise the heart rate, increase the pulse rate, and get the metabolism working. They also include activities designed to increase coordination, such as catching a ball and shooting an arrow at a target. The physical effort involved in these classes promotes the production of endorphins, hormones believed to improve mood and create pleasurable feelings. This allows students to go to their next class feeling cheerful, relaxed and ready to focus on their lessons. Finally, they can improve their social skills by following the rules in physical education classes. Although disputes do occur during competitions, teachers can use these moments to teach students about resolving conflicts in a positive manner. Recently there have been calls to reduce the number of physical education classes, but they should remain as they are now.

Archaeologists have discovered large amounts of cave art produced by early humans, Homo sapiens who lived thousands of years ago. This includes many realistic pictures of people hunting animals. Neanderthals, our ancient cousins, on the other hand, were not accomplished artists. Drawing and hunting both require hand-eye coordination. Neanderthals used spears to stab their prey at close range, which required little skill. Early humans living on the open grasslands of Africa also hunted with spears. However, they threw them at their prey, an act which required high levels of skill. This style of hunting improved their visualization abilities and caused their parietal cortexes ─ the part of the brain related to vision and motor skills ─ to develop. Not only this made them better hunters, but it also gave them the ability to create works of art depicting their hunting experiences.

Schoonschip is a neighborhood project creating sustainable houses that float on the water. Schoonschip is a Dutch word that means "clean ship" in English. The project is taking place on the Johan van Hasseltkanaal, a side canal in the north of Amsterdam. It was created as a way of dealing with the limited amount of available land in Amsterdam, which is expected to decrease due to rising sea levels. The houses all have solar panels, and the electricity that each house creates can be shared. They also have batteries in their basements for storing electricity and some have green roofs where fruit and vegetables can be grown. And water pumps are used to extract heat from the canal during the colder months of the year. Other cities around the world are watching the Schoonschip project carefully. There are many lessons to be learned about how to live in harmony with nature, even in an urban environment.

In ancient Greece, women had few opportunities to hold positions of power. That's why the role of the priestess of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi stands out. She was an important part of a powerful religious organization, and her job often involved telling powerful people unwelcome truths. For example, a man from Sparta once visited the temple hoping to be confirmed as the world's wisest man. The priestess, however, told him that someone else was wiser. In other situations, powerful men in ancient Greece would not have accepted this kind of straight talk from a woman. However, the Greeks believed that the god Apollo himself conveyed his superior divine knowledge through the priestess, so she was considered to be above the criticism of normal humans.

Empathy and sympathy are used similarly and often interchangeably but differ subtly in their emotional meaning. Empathy involves both recognizing the suffering of others and understanding their emotions because you have felt them yourself or put yourself in their shoes. It should not be confused with sympathy, which is merely the recognition of the distress felt by others. Feeling sympathy means you feel sorry for someone's situation, even if you've never been there yourself. Empathy is when you truly understand and can feel what another person is going through. Compared to empathy, sympathy displays a lower degree of understanding and engagement with the situation faced by the suffering person. Since it requires shared experiences, empathy is generally felt only for other people, not for animals. For example, you can sympathize with a horse that is forced to pull a heavy load, but it is unlikely that you can truly empathize with it.

Many offices have a policy that allows workers to wear more casual clothes every Friday. This policy costs companies nothing and improves the attitude of workers, so it has been growing more and more popular in recent years. The concept actually dates back to the 1960s in Hawaii. The president of the Hawaiian Fashion Guild was trying to spread the popularity of Hawaiian shirts, short-sleeved, button-down shirts with colorful prints and patterns. Hawaiian workers favored these shirts due to the hot weather there. He sent Hawaiian shirts to politicians and lobbied the government to allow workers to wear them every Friday. This idea became known as Aloha Fridays. Later, tech workers in Silicon Valley were drawn to the idea. Eventually, Aloha Fridays became casual Fridays, and the concept spread across the world.
