The ancient Greeks used the term "philosophy" to refer to the act of seeking knowledge for its own sake. This covered all fields of knowledge, including art, science and religion. This usage explains how philosophical questions differ from scientific ones ─ they are usually foundational and abstract in nature. Philosophy, therefore, is accomplished through reflection rather than experimentation. This often leads to the misunderstanding that philosophy is impractical, inconclusive, and unproductive. However, philosophy has generated some of the most important ideas in history and has contributed to politics, sociology, mathematics, science, literature, and nearly every other field. It may not directly answer our questions about the origins of the universe or the meaning of life, but it is essential that we continue to ask such philosophical questions and seek their answers. Doing so can teach us to become better thinkers and make it easier for us to understand a variety of situations in other areas of life.

Horseshoe crabs have been around for more than 450 million years and have survived three great extinction events. Despite their name, they are not actual crabs. They are more closely related to arachnids. Unlike human blood, horseshoe crab blood is blue. Horseshoe crabs do not use hemoglobin, the substance that transports oxygen throughout our bodies. Instead, they use hemocyanin, which contains copper, to transport oxygen. This is why their blood is a distinctive shade of blue. When the blood comes into contact with bacteria, it surrounds them and forms a solid material. This action, called clotting, traps the bacteria, stopping it from spreading to other parts of the crab. This clotting agent is used to make a solution known as LAL, which can detect bacterial contamination in medicines and vaccines. Before LAL was discovered, researchers tested vaccines and other drugs by injecting them into laboratory animals and waiting to see it they suffered from adverse reactions.

The term deus ex machina refers to a situation in fiction or drama where an unexpected character arrives or something extremely unlikely occurs and provides a contrived solution to an insolvable difficulty. For example, the main characters might get trapped in a dangerous situation, but someone suddenly appears from nowhere and rescues them. The term literally means "god from a machine" in Latin. "Machine," in this case, refers to the cranes used to lower actors playing gods onto the stage, where they would set things right at the end of the play. Deus ex machina is still a common plot device in films, novels, and short stories today. However, it is often considered a sign of an ill-structured plot. Instead of using a logical situation, the writer relies on something unbelievable, highlighting the inherent deficiencies of the story.

Imagine there are two envelopes and you can have one. One contains $10, and the other is empty. How much would you pay to find out which envelope contains the money? Obviously, you wouldn't pay $10. But you might be willing to pay as much as $9. It's a matter of how much value you place on making an extra dollar. Businesses must make this kind of decision every day. They pay market research teams lots of money to find out how likely it is that a new product will be successful. Product development can cost millions of dollars, so the companies are willing to pay these teams hundreds of thousands of dollars. Just like in the situation with the envelope, the goal is to gain information that will reduce uncertainty. Businesses place a value on information every time they buy competitive intelligence, hire consultants or researchers. They generally will not talk in terms of information value, but this is basically the value judgement they are making.

Majority influence pressures members of a group to comply to its norms, although a few individuals in the group may retain a different view. Although most group members are unlikely to accept a minority's point of view, if the view is unusual or novel, some members may choose to consider it. They do this based on its merits, rather than whether or not it complies with the group's norms, which may cause them to question their existing views. As a result, a minority view can become internalized by these members of a group. A good example of this took place in the UK during the 1910s, when the suffragette movement challenged the status quo, which restricted the right to vote to male citizens. The minority group insisted that this was unfair and tried to persuade the majority to accept its views regarding women's rights. Eventually, women were given the right to vote in 1918.

When you do well on a test, you may believe that it's because you studied hard. But when you failed an exam, you may blame outside forces, saying the classroom was too warm or the teacher didn't explain the subject correctly. This is a good example of a self-serving bias. It is generally more common in Western countries, where individual achievement is of greater importance. As a result, people feel the need to protect themselves from feelings of personal failure. On the other hand, in collectivist cultures, where personal success is viewed as luck and failures as lack of talent, self-serving bias is likely to occur less commonly. It is also less likely to occur with people who are in a close relationship, whether it is a romance or a friendship. Having someone around who you like and trust, in other words, can make you more honest when it comes to accepting responsibility for a bad situation.

When we hear about hundreds of people being killed in a natural disaster, we're likely to assume it involved a well-known hazard such as a volcano, an earthquake, or a flood. Few people would expect a beautiful lake to be the cause of so many deaths. However, this is what happened at Lake Nyos, a volcanic lake located in Cameroon, West Africa. In 1986, villagers living on the shores of the lakes heard a strange rumbling sound. Running outside to see what had happened, they were shocked to see a tall fountain of water and a cloud of white gas rising up from the surface of the lake. As the gas flowed through the villages, people and livestock began to lose consciousness and fall to the ground. Sadly, the gas was carbon dioxide. Within minutes, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the air had risen to more than 15%. Any living thing that inhales air that has a carbon-dioxide concentration of greater than 15% will die instantly. If the concentration is less than 15%, they will pass out but regain consciousness a short time later. Nearly 1,700 people and 3,000 farm animals lost their lives that day. Scientists believe that carbon dioxide had been dissolving into the lake for years. However, it didn't cause any problems, as it remained at the bottom of the lake, where the water did not circulate. But when the underwater volcano erupted, large amounts of carbon dioxide were released into the air, causing the terrible disaster.
