When we see something, we naturally and automatically break it up into shapes, colors, and concepts that we have learned through education. We recode what we see through the lens of everything we know. We reconstruct memories rather than retrieving the video from memory. This is a useful trait. It’s a more efficient way to store information ―a bit like an optimal image compression algorithm such as JPG, rather than storing a raw bitmap image file. People who lack this ability and remember everything in perfect detail struggle to generalize, learn, and make connections between what they have learned. But representing the world as abstract ideas and features comes at a cost of seeing the world as it is. Instead, we see the world through our assumptions, motivations, and past experiences. The discovery that our memories are reconstructed through abstract representations rather than played back like a movie completely undermined the legal primacy of eyewitness testimony. Seeing is not believing.

Nothing is trash by nature. Anthropologist Mary Douglas brings back and analyzes the common saying that dirt is "matter out of place." Dirt is relative, she emphasizes. "Shoes are not dirty in themselves, but it is dirty to place them on the dining-table; food is not dirty in itself, but it is dirty to leave pots and pans in the bedroom, or food all over clothing; similarly, bathroom items in the living room; clothing lying on chairs; outdoor things placed indoors; upstairs things downstairs, and so on." Sorting the dirty from the clean ― removing the shoes from the table, putting the dirty clothing in the washing machine ― involves systematic ordering and classifying. Eliminating dirt is thus a positive process.

Serving in the military, I relied heavily on this saying to guide my actions. Whenever I had a difficult decision to make, I would ask myself, "Can you stand before the long green table?" Since WWII, the conference tables used in military boardrooms had been constructed of long, narrow pieces of furniture covered in green felt. Whenever a formal proceeding took place that required multiple officers to adjudicate an issue, the officers would gather around the table. The point of the saying was simple. If you couldn't make a good case to the officers sitting around the long green table, then you should reconsider your actions. Every time I was about to make an important decision, I asked myself, "Can I stand before the long green table and be satisfied that I took all the right actions?" It is one of the most fundamental questions a leader must ask themselves ― and the old saying helped me remember what steps to take.

We can no longer afford to see law as a series of dry and dusty legal codes that, in the face of evolving technology, are already outdated by the time the laws are printed. That vision of law is just going to have to go. We must learn to see the discipline of law as a method for adapting to technological change, not a series of presently existing rules. We must attend to change in law, rather than its present state. It's like driving a car: many people look at the speedometer to see how fast they are going. That's looking at the law as it is now. But we need to be looking at how fast we are accelerating. That's a different way to look at law, and one that is necessary if law is to keep pace with technology.

The world economy is not completely free. There are limits to international trade. In the large majority of developing countries, the government heavily supports businesses by, for example, having state-owned banks lend them money at extremely low interest rates. Such government support has alarmed the United States and other rich countries. They fear that given the huge number of developing countries with government-subsidized companies, the rich countries will be flooded with extremely cheap imports, which will bankrupt many of their own companies and cause a wide-spread loss of jobs. Rich countries have therefore demanded "a level playing field," pressuring this group of developing countries to abandon government support if they want to join the international trading system. Of course, complying with this demand will effectively destroy these countries' hope of becoming prosperous.
