Emotion socialization ─ learning from other people about emotions and how to deal with them ─ starts early in life and plays a foundational role for emotion regulation development. Although extra-familial influences, such as peers or media, gain in importance during adolescence, parents remain the primary socialization agents. For example, their own responses to emotional situations serve as a role model for emotion regulation, increasing the likelihood that their children will show similar reactions in comparable situations. Parental practices at times when their children are faced with emotional challenges also impact emotion regulation development. Whereas direct soothing and directive guidance of what to do are beneficial for younger children, they may intrude on adolescents' autonomy striving. In consequence, adolescents might pull away from, rather than turn toward, their parents in times of emotional crisis, unless parental practices are adjusted. More suitable in adolescence is indirect support of autonomous emotion regulation, such as through interest in, as well as awareness and nonjudgmental acceptance of, adolescents' emotional experiences, and being available when the adolescent wants to talk.

Human innovation in agriculture has unlocked modifications in apples, tulips, and potatoes that never would have been realized through a plant's natural reproductive cycles. This cultivation process has created some of the recognizable vegetables and fruits consumers look for in their grocery stores. However, relying on only a few varieties of cultivated crops can leave humankind vulnerable to starvation and agricultural loss if a harvest is destroyed. For example, a million people died over the course of three years during the Irish potato famine because the Irish relied primarily on potatoes and milk to create a nutritionally balanced meal. In order to continue its symbiotic relationship with cultivated plants, humanity must allow for biodiversity and recognize the potential drawbacks that monocultures of plants can introduce. Planting seeds of all kinds, even if they don't seem immediately useful or profitable, can ensure the longevity of those plants for generations to come. A balance must be struck between nature's capacity for wildness and humanity's desire for control.

Imagine offering a group of people either donuts or chocolate ice cream. The group is indifferent overall, which means that half the people in the group will choose donuts and the other half will choose chocolate ice cream. Now imagine that a third option is introduced and in this case it is fish-flavored ice cream. The introduction of this option, which is less preferred than the other two options, can shift people’s choices between donuts and chocolate ice cream. The attraction effect occurs when an unwanted option makes the option to which it compares most closely seem more attractive, and leads people to choose the comparatively better option. In this case, it is chocolate ice cream. The key to why this is such an interesting effect is that the third option is undesirable and therefore irrelevant. Because no one would ever choose fish-flavored ice cream, all the people should still be undecided about whether they want chocolate ice cream or donuts. But all of a sudden, because of the fish-flavored ice cream, the chocolate ice cream seems more appealing.

“Korean industry is struggling to move on from the old model,” says a former South Korean trade minister. “It hasn’t worked out what comes next.” One of the reasons why it is proving so hard to reform the “old model,” say economists, is because it has been so successful. The achievements of South Korea’s state-guided capitalism, which took it from an impoverished agricultural society to a technological powerhouse in less than half a century, have come to be known as the “miracle on the Han River.” In 2018, South Korea’s GDP per capita surpassed that of Japan. The managing partner of consultancy McKinsey’s practice in Seoul notes that South Korea made two great leaps ― one between the 1960s and the 1980s, when the country moved from basic goods to petrochemicals and heavy industry, and the second between the 1980s and 2000s, when it moved to hightech manufacturing.

Boston and Cambridge are cities where many people do not stay for too long. Many people here are graduate students and postdoctorals, which means that by definition their positions have an expiration date. Boston and Cambridge are melting pots, but also cities where you make new friends at farewell parties. The combination of high resident turnover and friendships produces a situation in which the best apartments in Cambridge never reach the market. When someone moves out of a good apartment, there’s always a friend looking to move in, and landlords usually are okay with this hand-me-down dynamic because it saves them the burden of finding a new tenant. So the lesson is that, at least in the case of Boston and Cambridge, the real estate market for apartments is secondary to the social network. According to Mark Granovetter, a sociologist who has studied the economic relevance of social networks throughout much of his life, we can say that in Cambridge the market for student apartments is embedded in the network of social interactions.
