Some people argue that there is a single, logically consistent concept known as reading that can be neatly set apart from everything else people do with books. Is reading really that simple? The most productive way to think about reading is as a loosely related set of behaviors that belong together owing to family resemblances, as Ludwig Wittgenstein used the phrase, without having in common a single defining trait. Consequently, efforts to distinguish reading from nonreading are destined to fail because there is no agreement on what qualifies as reading in the first place. The more one tries to figure out where the border lies between reading and not-reading, the more edge cases will be found to stretch the term's flexible boundaries. Thus, it is worth attempting to collect together these exceptional forms of reading into a single forum, one highlighting the challenges faced by anyone wishing to establish the boundaries where reading begins and ends. The attempt moves toward an understanding of reading as a spectrum that is expansive enough to accommodate the distinct reading activities.

Great scientists are seldom one-hit wonders. Newton is a prime example: beyond the Newtonian mechanics, he developed the theory of gravitation, calculus, laws of motion, and optimization. In fact, well-known scientists are often involved in multiple discoveries, a phenomenon potentially explained by the Matthew effect. Indeed, an initial success may offer a scientist legitimacy, improve peer perception, provide knowledge of how to score and win, enhance social status, and attract resources and quality collaborators, each of these payoffs further increasing her odds of scoring another win. Yet, there is an appealing alternative explanation: Great scientists have multiple hits and consistently succeed in their scientific endeavors simply because they're exceptionally talented. Therefore, future success again goes to those who have had success earlier, not because of advantages offered by the previous success, but because the earlier success was indicative of a hidden talent. The Matthew effect posits that success alone increases the future probability of success, raising the question: Does status dictate outcomes, or does it simply reflect an underlying talent or quality? In other words, is there really a Matthew effect after all?

It is an unusual characteristic of the English language to treat weeping and crying as synonyms. Weeping has two basic reflex-characteristics which are found in all its varieties: the overflow of the tear-glands and a specific form of breathing. These vary in intensity from a mere moistening of the eye and “catching one’s breath” (or feeling “a lump in the throat”) to an outburst of tears accompanied by convulsive sobbing; just as laughter varies in intensity from smiling to convulsions. Crying, on the other hand, is the emitting of sounds signalling distress, protest, or some other emotion. It may be combined with, or alternate with, weeping. Frequently when a child, or a depressed patient, is said to be “crying his head off” his eyes are in fact dry: he is not weeping. On the other hand, when your charlady has a “good cry” at the movies, she isn’t crying at all but weeping. Crying is a form of communication (even if the audience is only imagined); weeping is not.

Imagine an invitation to cooperate with someone, which would bring a common income of $100. Will you accept the invitation, given you get $40? Many would agree: there is a lot of cooperation in the world, but much less equality. Realists would warn states against such a decision. What matters for them is not that you get $40, but what your partner gets $60, thus gaining a $20 advantage. Consequently, states seek relative advantages in their relations with each other. For them it is important to be stronger than their potential rivals; absolute gains are secondary. Guided by seeking relative advantages and not trusting one another, states usually do not engage into longterm partnerships. Integration is assessed by realists through the lenses of coalition theory, as they cannot fully account for states’ voluntary renunciation of sovereignty, supposed to be a sacred priority. In general, relations among states are dominated by distrust, suspicion and anticipation of the worst.

Many students hear stories of what college is like from friends and family, but some of these tales contain misinformation that can actually hurt their college performance. For example, Andrew, one of our students, recently missed class because he was running late and heard from his brother that you shouldn’t bother to even go to class if you will be more than ten minutes late. He told Andrew that professors don’t let anyone in when they are so late. Although this may be true for some classes, it was not for ours, and Andrew missed some very important information (and was not able to turn in an assignment due that day, so he also lost some points). The moral of this story is to find out your professors’ rules for attendance and follow them ― don’t take it for granted that the rules are the same in all cases, and don’t rely on another student’s “expertise”. Go to the source of the information you want.
