In general, kinetic energy is the energy associated with motion, while potential energy represents the energy which is "stored" in a physical system. Moreover, the total energy is always conserved. But while the total energy remains unchanged, the kinetic and potential parts of the total energy can change all the time. Imagine, for example, a pendulum which swings back and forth. When it swings, it sweeps out an arc and then slows down as it comes closer to its highest point, where the pendulum does not move at all. So at this point, the energy is completely given in terms of potential energy. But after this brief moment of rest, the pendulum swings back again and therefore part of the total energy is then given in the form of kinetic energy. So as the pendulum swings, kinetic and potential energy constantly change into each other.

One of the big questions faced this past year was how to keep innovation rolling when people were working entirely virtually. But experts say that digital work didn't have a negative effect on innovation and creativity. Working within limits pushes us to solve problems. Overall, virtual meeting platforms put more constraints on communication and collaboration than face-to-face settings. For instance, with the press of a button, virtual meeting hosts can control the size of breakout groups and enforce time constraints; only one person can speak at a time; nonverbal signals, particularly those below the shoulders, are diminished; "seating arrangements" are assigned by the platform, not by individuals; and visual access to others may be limited by the size of each participant's screen. Such restrictions are likely to stretch participants beyond their usual ways of thinking, boosting creativity.

The rise of sea levels along a coast depends on its distance from the two major ice sources: Greenland and Antarctica. While it's easy to think the closest countries will see the biggest rise as the ice melts, it's not so simple. Greenland and Antarctica's massive ice sheets exert a strong gravitational pull on the waters around them, but as they melt, the attraction weakens, causing nearby sea levels to fall. In addition, once the weight of ice is removed, the land uplifts, rising slightly more above the water. The effect diminishes with distance, so it's actually the places farther away from the melting ice that will see the biggest rise in sea level. Ocean currents help push the meltwater around the globe. "It's really an amazing and somewhat counterintuitive result, but that's the reality," says Jerry Mitrovica, a geophysicist at Harvard University.

Stand at the edge of your favorite beach and look out. You are seeing one of the most unusual sights our universe has to offer: large amounts of liquid water. This perception of the oceans of the Earth as a unique phenomenon is fairly new. Those who read science fiction will have vivid memories of the "canals of Mars" and the "swamps of Venus." Less than 25 years ago, scientists thought that our neighboring planets likely had a lot of water. On Mars, the white polar caps indicated that the temperature might be too cold for the water to be liquid, so that it was thought to be locked in ice sheets. On Venus, the cloud cover prevented us from seeing the surface, but it didn't prevent us from imagining the planet as an overgrown version of the Amazon rainforest. In both cases, our view of neighboring planets was shaped by the expectation that water, so plentiful on the Earth, must be plentiful everywhere else in the solar system.
