DAY 5(55문항) 변형문제의 지문입니다.

Some people think poorly of people who create fanciful dreams or ideas. But many, perhaps most, of our waking hours are spent in dreams. We daydream when driving, when walking, when cooking dinner, when getting dressed in the morning, and when staring off into space at work. Whenever the mind is not absorbed in a mentally demanding task ─ say, writing a paragraph on an exam or doing some difficult calculations ─ it will get restless and skip off into la-la land. Clever scientific studies involving beepers and diaries suggest that an average daydream is about fourteen seconds long and that we have about two thousand of them per day. In other words, we spend about half of our waking hours ─ one-third of our lives on Earth ─ spinning fantasies. We daydream about the past: things we should have said or done, working through our victories and failures. We also daydream about mundane stuff, such as imagining different ways of handling a conflict at work.

If an animal is innately programmed for some type of behavior, then there are likely to be biological clues. It is no accident that fish have bodies which are streamlined and smooth, with fins and a powerful tail. Their bodies are structurally adapted for moving fast through the water. Similarly, if you found a dead bird or mosquito, you could guess by looking at its wings that flying was its normal mode of transport. However, we must not be over-optimistic. Biological clues are not essential. The extent to which they are found varies from animal to animal and from activity to activity. For example, it is impossible to guess from their bodies that birds make nests, and, sometimes, animals behave in a way quite contrary to what might be expected from their physical form: ghost spiders have tremendously long legs, yet they weave webs out of very short strands. To a human observer, their legs seem a great hindrance as they spin and move about the web.

What is the best order for a report, paper or other technical document? Of course, it must be logical; but that means simply that the paper must have connection and sequence, and a variety of orders are possible under this heading. Too many writers interpret the term logical to mean chronological, and it has become habitual to begin reports and papers with careful reviews of previous work. Usually, this is tactically weak. Most readers of reports and papers are reading the documents because they are interested in, and know something about, the subject. Therefore, to them the findings of previous work are unnecessary reminders. The interesting thing for them is the new information ─ the new findings and conclusions. So it is usually best to start with those pieces of information. To give a long chronological account of work or procedures is normally appropriate only when the essential point of the paper is the chronological sequence.

Of cultivated crops, cereals were of the greatest economic importance in the Mediterranean region in ancient times, just as rice was the basic type of food in East Asia, and Indian corn and quinoa in the Americas. Since wild plants were necessarily self-seeding for their survival, the early Neolithic farmers favored individual plants that had developed mutations that prevented their pods from opening naturally and scattering their seeds. Thus, they were able to harvest their crops without losing grains, and could later separate the seeds from the pods. Similarly with animals: those that exhibited obedient characteristics were favored over the strong-willed and were further bred to eliminate their wild characteristics. This ─ the earliest form of genetic manipulation by humans ─ was eventually to make a significant portion of Mediterranean flora and fauna dependent on human assistance in reproduction and survival.

You can't have a democracy if you can't talk with your neighbors about matters of mutual interest or concern. Thomas Jefferson, who had an enduring interest in democracy, came to a similar conclusion. He was prescient in understanding the dangers of concentrated power, whether in corporations or in political leaders or exclusionary political institutions. Direct involvement of citizens was what had made the American Revolution possible and given the new republic vitality and hope for the future. Without that involvement, the republic would die. Eventually, he saw a need for the nation to be subdivided into "wards" ─ political units so small that everyone living there could participate directly in the political process. The representatives for each ward in the capital would have to be responsive to citizens organized in this way. A vibrant democracy conducted locally would then provide the active basic unit for the democratic life of the republic. With that kind of involvement, the republic might survive and prosper.
