It’s so much easier to reach your hand into a cookie jar without thinking about it if that jar is easily accessible and visible. That is the type of a scenario that you want to avoid when designing an environment for discipline. Take for an example the case of distraction caused by the most notorious of modern-day diversions ─ the mobile phone. While you’re at your desk, typing away on your computer for a soon-due report ─ or attempting to, more like ─ your phone sits just beside your keyboard. This arrangement makes it oh-so-easy for your hand to alight on your phone whenever you pause to think what to type next, and the next thing you know, you’re trapped in an endless cycle of scrolling through Facebook memes, bingeing on YouTube videos, and chatting with your friends over WhatsApp.

The analogy below allows us to recognize that moral progress is possible. Before the invention of the microscope, people had no tools for seeing microscopic creatures and, consequently, made inaccurate judgments regarding the causes of disease. With the invention of the microscope, however, scientists were able to perceive entities they’d previously been unable to and, as a result, were able to make improved judgments ─ many of which we still accept today. Similarly, in the moral sphere, when people don’t have the tools needed for perceiving the rightness or wrongness of something, they make judgments that are less accurate than they would be if they had such tools. We can see then, for instance, how the limited perspective of some people in 19th-century America led them to conclude that racism was acceptable and how our wider perspective these days enables us to recognize how terribly mistaken that earlier judgment was.

In 1783, Goethe wrote, “Nature is ever shaping new forms: what is, has never yet been; what has been, comes not again.” If this is true, then the aims and objectives for nature reserves are for us to define as we see fit. It is now generally accepted that there is no default setting for how the world should look. Natural means different things to different people. For some research workers, natural states are those that existed before the Europeans turned up and started clearing land, farming, grazing, and controlling wildfires. This definition is being revised now by other researchers because humans have been altering the world for much longer than the Europeans have been colonizing the world. Furthermore, some human-induced changes are impossible to change. In addition, we must realize that environmental and ecological changes are normal; the world is in permanent flux and few of our present major ecosystems are more than twelve thousand years old. Records from paleoecological studies seem to indicate that for any given place, over time there are many alternative, very different “natural” states.
4번 지문
Scientists are not, as many believe, primarily concerned about discovering and gathering facts. Rather, researchers ask crucial questions about the natural world and then try to answer them by proposing hypotheses ─ creative insights about what the truthful responses to those questions might be. What really separates the scientific method from other ways of knowing is its reliance on the rigorous testing of each hypothesis by experimentation or by the gathering of additional observations; the explicit intent of the test is to determine whether the hypothesis is false or true. If the test results disagree with the prediction, then the hypothesis being evaluated is disproved, meaning that it cannot be a legitimate account of reality. Then it is either modified into a new hypothesis that is compatible with the test findings or discarded altogether and replaced by other, still-to-be-tested hypotheses. Keep in mind, however, that agreement between expected and experimental test results is not proof that the hypothesis is true. Rather, it means only that the hypothesis continues to be a valid version of reality for the time being. It may not survive the next test. If a hypothesis repeatedly avoids disproof, then scientists regard it as a close approximation of reality.
