DAY 8(55문항) 변형문제의 지문입니다.

Most linguists and local community members agree that education and literacy in the local language are necessary to maintain vitality, or to revitalize a language threatened with endangerment. Some local communities reject this notion, wanting to preserve their oral traditions and to rely solely on them. There is, however, a cost to this decision, as it limits the domains in which the language can be used. Regardless, most regard literacy as essential for local languages. Yet more than half of all languages have no written form, and so a writing system needs to be developed for them in order to use them in education and literacy programs. Basic pedagogical and reference materials are needed, including textbooks, dictionaries, and usable descriptive grammars. Such materials are readily available for languages of wider communication, but not for the majority of local languages. In addition, reading material is needed for literacy as well.

Many of us tend to feel uncomfortable making requests of anyone beyond our "inner circle" of family and close friends. But in doing so we vastly underestimate the responsiveness of "weak ties" ─ our acquaintances and people we don't know very well. Weak ties are extremely valuable because they are the bridges between social circles. Novel information, new solutions to problems, and other resources travel across these bridges. We also vastly underestimate the responsiveness of "dormant ties" ─ the connections we once had which we haven't maintained. For example, most people wouldn't even consider reaching out to a high school classmate they haven't seen in twenty-five years to ask for a job lead; we assume such attempts to reconnect would be rejected, or that our former classmate would resent our reaching out only to ask for a favor. But most people in your past would actually welcome hearing from ─ and helping ─ you, according to organizational researchers. The passage of time doesn't erase a shared history of understanding, emotions, and trust.

In modern economies, the distinction between goods and services itself is actually being obscured. One aspect of this shift to a service economy is what has been called the 'servitization' of products. The notion is that, in a modern economy, products cannot exist on their own and some degree of service is needed to make those products useful. Consider the automobile, which is of course a real good. It is only useful, however, over an extended period of time if the owner submits it to continual checkups, fills it with gas and oil, and pays for insurance, registration, and taxes so that he can operate it on community roads. The car is a real good, but it is not necessarily useful unless one also includes the many services that accompany it.

We all encounter problems throughout life, and we learn to solve these problems with greater ease. In fact, the ability to solve problems is not only a fundamental requirement for real life, but it also holds great significance in the realm of storytelling. A good story usually begins with a problem or challenge faced by the main character, whose task is to find the means to reach an appropriate resolution. Becoming engaged with the character or problem of the tale, the listener also becomes involved in the process of how to resolve the problem or how to develop appropriate problem-solving skills that may not have existed before. For example, a story about a character who learns to manage their time effectively could inspire the listener to develop better time-management skills, which they could then apply to various aspects of their own life.

At some point in your life, you've probably been invited to a social engagement you didn't want to attend. Sometimes in that situation, we will struggle to come up with excuses for not going that won't offend whoever invited us. Interestingly, we often fail to recognize when we are doing the exact same thing to ourselves in order to feel better. However, it would actually be better to start being upfront with yourself about your behavior. For instance, instead of rationalizing skipping a run because "it's too hot outside" or "it's too late," you would just start saying, "I'm not going to run today because I'm too soft and lazy to control myself." In reality, you know the right thing to do is run, so you are taking the easy way out, making excuses for yourself. By asking yourself a question, "Am I doing the right thing or simply what's easy?" you'll begin to realize the excuses that you usually make. In effect, you become confrontational with yourself, which can make you behave in a very controlled way.
