Reflection and reflecting are a psychologist's favorite words, and with good reason: a reflective person has access to his inner motives, feelings, and thoughts, and is able to see the (psycho)logical connection between them and his actions. Because he's keeping an eye on his dark side, he's better able to keep it in check. For instance, he'll recognize that the aversion he feels toward his coworker isn't actually because she's supposedly unfriendly ― it's because of the envy he feels at her success. By seeing this in himself, he will likely conclude that it really wouldn't be fair to target this person. Chances are good he'll behave amicably toward her and manage to regulate his green-eyed monster internally. Because he has access to his feelings of envy and inferiority, he also has the ability to sway these feelings in a more positive direction. Were he unable to admit that his coworker's success rubbed his ego the wrong way, he may have felt tempted to attack her, if only with a few verbal jabs to cut her down ― even in front of others.

Plastic is extremely slow to degrade and tends to float, which allows it to travel in ocean currents for thousands of miles. Most plastics break down into smaller and smaller pieces when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light, forming microplastics. These microplastics are very difficult to measure once they are small enough to pass through the nets typically used to collect them. Their impacts on the marine environment and food webs are still poorly understood. These tiny particles are known to be eaten by various animals and to get into the food chain. Because most of the plastic particles in the ocean are so small, there is no practical way to clean up the ocean. One would have to filter enormous amounts of water to collect a relatively small amount of plastic.

Other people's reactions can influence whether any one individual decides to help. No one wants to foolishly rush to help in a case that may not be an emergency after all. In fact, people sometimes fail to act because they fear appearing foolish in front of others. So we usually keep calm and check to see what others present are doing. Of course, if everyone else is also keeping calm while they check the reactions of others, everyone will conclude that help is not needed or that norms make helping inappropriate. In one series of studies, experimenters arranged for smoke to pour into a laboratory room in which students were sitting completing questionnaires. When the students were alone, their concern at the unusual situation soon led them to seek help. But when two confederates in the room showed no reaction to the smoke, participants also did nothing. When people notice that bystanders and passersby are unresponsive, that observation reduces the likelihood that they will help. Thus, one way that the presence of bystanders can influence helping is by suggesting that helping is contrary to norms.

Individuals who perform at a high level in their profession often have instant credibility with others. People admire them, they want to be like them, and they feel connected to them. When they speak, others listen ― even if the area of their skill has nothing to do with the advice they give. Think about a world-famous basketball player. He has made more money from endorsements than he ever did playing basketball. Is it because of his knowledge of the products he endorses? No. It's because of what he can do with a basketball. The same can be said of an Olympic medalist swimmer. People listen to him because of what he can do in the pool. And when an actor tells us we should drive a certain car, we don't listen because of his expertise on engines. We listen because we admire his talent. Excellence connects. If you possess a high level of ability in an area, others may desire to connect with you because of it.

Over time, babies construct expectations about what sounds they will hear when. They hold in memory the sound patterns that occur on a regular basis. They make hypotheses like, "If I hear this sound first, it probably will be followed by that sound." Scientists conclude that much of babies' skill in learning language is due to their ability to calculate statistics. For babies, this means that they appear to pay close attention to the patterns that repeat in language. They remember, in a systematic way, how often sounds occur, in what order, with what intervals, and with what changes of pitch. This memory store allows them to track, within the neural circuits of their brains, the frequency of sound patterns and to use this knowledge to make predictions about the meaning in patterns of sounds.

In the 1830s and 1840s, several European countries were gripped by a passion for statistics. It made things visible that had previously been hidden or taken for granted. The poor appeared as a social entity only when they were counted, and the resulting emergence of "poverty" as an abstract concept helped to arouse a moral commitment. Statistical societies and journals were founded, and government offices were called into being to gather, evaluate, and store social data. Politics rested more than ever before on exact information. In France, the systematic and regular collection of data was instituted at the prefecture level in 1801. Seeking to make deep inroads into civil society, the Napoleonic state needed as much accurate information as possible about it. In Britain too, despite its much less developed regional bureaucracy, the parliamentary government made extensive use of empirical facts about all manner of things ― from sanitation in workers' districts to the medical condition of soldiers in the army. The collection of these was entrusted to ad hoc royal commissions, whose conclusions were publicly available both to the government of the day and to its critics.

Compelling evidence from industrial working practice demonstrates that in many critical infrastructure companies, decision-makers find it difficult to get objective information about safety and technological risks. Management theory postulates that executives manage their subordinates through information: they receive information from various sources, process it, take decisions and convey these to their subordinates. The quality of information received by executives about the real situation inside and outside an organization affects the quality of their decisions, and ultimately the adequacy of an organization's response to any changes in the internal and external environment. Getting feedback from subordinates about the real situation at the very bottom of the corporate hierarchy is crucial for the survival of an organization in the long-term, as it allows executives to detect risks in time and take measures to mitigate them. But in reality, for a number of reasons, feedback from subordinates to executives is often distorted. As a result, executives often receive unrealistically reassuring reports from subordinates ― assurances that in general, everything at the bottom of the hierarchy is fine and all risks are under proper control.

In Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking-Glass, the Red Queen takes Alice on a race through the countryside. They run and they run, but then Alice discovers that they're still under the same tree that they started from. The Red Queen explains to Alice: "here, you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place." Biologists sometimes use this Red Queen Effect to explain an evolutionary principle. If foxes evolve to run faster so they can catch more rabbits, then only the fastest rabbits will live long enough to make a new generation of bunnies that run even faster ― in which case, of course, only the fastest foxes will catch enough rabbits to thrive and pass on their genes. Even though they might run, the two species just stay in place.

To understand where AI has come from and where it is going, it is useful to distinguish narrow (or weak) and strong AI ― the latter is usually referred to as artificial general intelligence or AGI. Here an analogy may be helpful. Imagine a chair that is mass-produced in a factory. The machine that assembles the individual parts of the chair follows very specific instructions. The machine cannot decide to create another furniture item ― let's say a table ― unless it is programmed to do so. When the machine breaks down, it cannot fix itself. It is very good at performing a pre-defined task (assembling a chair) quickly and efficiently, but it cannot solve problems and it cannot do new things or adapt to new situations. This is narrow AI. Now imagine a skilled carpenter who makes wooden chairs by hand. She can create unique chair designs. She gets better at her craft over time, learning from her successes and mistakes. She teaches herself to use new and more sophisticated carpentry tools, and she takes pride in her work. The skilled carpenter represents AGI, which is indistinguishable from human intelligence.

All editing systems are now nonlinear computer-based systems that allow random access to any video shot or scene without having to fast forward or fast reverse to find it. Nonlinear systems can create a range of special effects, such as slow motion, wipes and dissolves. Another highlight of a digital nonlinear system is its random access process that makes it easy for an editor to find desired shots or scenes without having to spend time fast forwarding or rewinding videotape. With nonlinear editing, shots or scenes can be easily added or removed anywhere in the program, and the computer adjusts the program length automatically. Linear editing was like composing a paper on a typewriter. If a mistake was made or new information needed to be added the whole piece had to be retyped. Nonlinear editing, on the other hand, is like using a word processing program. If a mistake is made, it is easily deleted and fixed with a few keystrokes, and new information can be added easily.

Growing crops forced people to stay in one place. Hunter-gatherers typically moved around frequently, and they had to be able to carry all their possessions with them every time they moved. In particular, mothers had to carry their young children. As a result, hunter-gatherer mothers could have only one baby every four years or so, spacing their births so that they never had to carry more than one child at a time. Farmers, on the other hand, could live in the same place year after year and did not have to worry about transporting young children long distances. Societies that settled down in one place were able to shorten their birth intervals from four years to about two. This meant that each woman could have more children than her hunter-gatherer counterpart, which in turn resulted in rapid population growth among farming communities. An increased population was actually an advantage to agricultural societies, because farming required large amounts of human labor.

Nancy Lowry and David Johnson conducted an experiment to study a teaching environment where fifth and sixth graders were assigned to interact on a topic. With one group, the discussion was led in a way that built an agreement. With the second group, the discussion was designed to produce disagreements about the right answer. Students who easily reached an agreement were less interested in the topic, studied less, and were less likely to visit the library to get additional information. The most noticeable difference, though, was revealed when teachers showed a special film about the discussion topic ― during lunch time! Only 18 percent of the agreement group missed lunch time to see the film, but 45 percent of the students from the disagreement group stayed for the film. The thirst to fill a knowledge gap ― to find out who was right within the group ― can be more powerful than the thirst for slides and jungle gyms.
