A diet that is good for the health of the body is surprisingly similar to what we should choose for the health of the planet. Instead of continually emphasizing the need to lose weight or eat less fat or sugar, we could take a positive approach and focus on eating in ways that are consistent with the principles of environmental sustainability. Changing our food choices to reduce our carbon footprint may be a better motivator for healthier food choices than emphasizing calories. Each of us can reduce our carbon footprint by consuming and wasting less, and choosing more locally grown fresh foods. Each part of the food industry aims to sell more, but adopting a new mindset of responsibility is one way we can help preserve the local and global environment and at the same time decrease obesity and other health problems related to our excess consumption.

Contributing to other people's newsletters with articles or inserts is an inexpensive and excellent way to reach new markets and tap into the captured customers of another business. Most newsletter publishers welcome submissions from others because finding content for newsletters is an ongoing challenge. If you provide them with non-competing information, you can easily gain access to another company's newsletter. For example, a massage therapist might submit to a chiropractor's newsletter. The services are similar enough to appeal to the same audience, but different enough to offer distinct services. You can either submit a story, or provide an insert to the newsletter publisher. In the latter case, it works much like a joint mailing. You help defray the cost of mailing the newsletter in exchange for letting your insert ride along. Both parties win.

Worry is where we begin to reflect on and become anxious about possible dangers or unpleasant possibilities that might happen in the future. And this can be accompanied by associated secondary physical responses. Worry is evolution allowing human beings to work out possible consequences of different forms of action in the battle for survival, particularly in earlier times. It is this capacity that distinguishes us from animals, as we can anticipate possible outcomes, which gives us an evolutionary advantage. But with this advantage comes the potential disadvantage that we may end up worrying and anxious about many situations that in practice will never occur. For many, worry can take over their lives, and they can end up not enjoying the present as they are constantly living in a potential future scenario.

Perhaps the attraction of the lawn is in the human genes. The sociobiologists think so: they've gone so far as to propose a "Savanna Syndrome" to explain our love of grass. Encoded in our DNA is a preference for an open grassy landscape similar to the shortgrass savannas of Africa on which we evolved and spent our first few thousand years. A grassy plain dotted with trees offers safety from predators and a suitable environment for grazing animals. This is said to explain why we have recreated the wooded landscapes of Europe and North America in the image of East Africa. Thorstein Veblen, too, believed the popularity of lawns might be a result of our pastoral roots. "The close-cropped lawn," he wrote in The Theory of the Leisure Class, "is beautiful in the eyes of a people whose inherited bent it is to readily find pleasure in seeing a well-preserved pasture or grazing land."

Perhaps the most famous case of planned breakability is that of the light bulb. Today, more than 150 years after the light bulb was invented, an average modern incandescent bulb lasts 750 hours. So why is there an incandescent light bulb in Livermore, California, that has been burning nonstop for 110 years? It's because in 1924 in Geneva, all the light bulb manufacturers got together and created a cartel, at the time called Phoebus, to cut the life of a light bulb. By making the filaments less stable than they needed to be, light bulbs would burn out quicker, and the cartel could sell more. It was so serious that manufacturers were fined if their light bulbs lasted more than 1,500 hours. Before 1924 the average bulb lasted about 2,500 hours. Within a decade it was at 1,500 hours and has since declined to today's 750.

In experiments, we are usually interested in overall differences between various conditions. Suppose we find that participants randomly assigned to be alone help a victim more quickly than those assigned to groups of two or four bystanders. Before concluding that the number of bystanders truly influenced the speed of helping, we first must ask whether this difference can be generalized beyond the experiment. In other words, because our results are based only on a particular sample of people in each condition, how do we know that similar results would have occurred if we had tested other samples? Perhaps the participants we tested were not truly representative of the populations from which they were selected. Perhaps, despite random assignment, participants assigned to be alone happened to have more highly altruistic personalities than participants in the other conditions, and this is the explanation for the effect we observed.

Many celebrities have aspects of their personality that differ from what we see on screen. For example, Comedian Drew Carey sometimes plays the role of a very outspoken and sarcastic person, but he does good deeds. After the taping of an episode of Mr. Carey's TV sitcom, The Drew Carey Show, a man in the audience refused to leave until he had spoken to Mr. Carey. Of course, celebrities sometimes attract weird — and dangerous — fans. However, after Mr. Carey learned that the man was a former Marine like himself, he talked to the man for approximately 90 minutes. It is said that the guy had just been discharged. He was depressed and was really having a hard time adjusting to life outside of the service. He didn't know what his future held and felt aimless. Mr. Carey had felt the same way, so he knew what the man was feeling — and he was able to give him some encouraging words.

Humans have been on Earth for 200,000 years. For the first 99% of this time, we didn't do much of anything but reproduce and survive. This was mainly due to harsh global climatic conditions, which stabilized sometime around 10,000 years ago. People soon thereafter developed farming and irrigation, and they gave up their nomadic lifestyle in order to cultivate and tend stable crops. But not all farm plots are equal; regional variations in sunshine, soil, and other conditions meant that one farmer might grow particularly good onions while another grew especially good apples. This eventually resulted in specialization; instead of growing all the crops for his own family, a farmer might grow only what he was best at and trade some of it for things he wasn't growing. Because each farmer was producing only one crop, and more than he needed, marketplaces and trading emerged and grew, and the establishment of cities followed.

hen we are reading, few of us wonder whether a text was written by hand or word-processed. But experts on writing do not agree: pens and keyboards bring into play very different cognitive processes. Handwriting is a complex task which requires various skills ― feeling the pen and paper, moving the writing implement, and directing movement by thought. Children take several years to master this precise muscular exercise: you need to hold the scripting tool firmly while moving it in such a way as to leave a different mark for each letter. Operating a keyboard is not the same at all: all you have to do is press the right key. It is easy enough for children to learn very fast, but above all the movement is exactly identical, whatever the letter. It's a big change. Typing is the result of a singular movement of the body, handwriting is not. Furthermore, an electronic text does not leave the same mark as its handwritten counterpart. When you draft a text on the screen, you can change it as much as you like but there is no record of your editing. The software does keep track of the changes somewhere, but users cannot access them. With a pen and paper, however, it's all there. Words crossed out or corrected, bits scribbled in the margin and later additions are there for good, leaving a visual record of your work and its creative stages. Some handwriting advocates regret the disappearance of these ornamental effects. It's not just a question of writing a letter: it also involves drawing, acquiring a sense of harmony and balance, with rounded forms. There is an element of dancing when we write, a melody in the message, which adds the personal aspect to the text. After all, that's why emoticons were invented: to restore a little emotion to text messages.
