We give silent, often angry, messages to ourselves every day, such as "How stupid could I be," or "Why did I do that ─ what an idiot I am." It seems more acceptable in our society to get mad at yourself, than at a friend or someone else, even when they are clearly in the wrong. People who outwardly congratulate themselves are often seen as "conceited" or "egotistical" ─ all very negative labels. So there is a high percentage of people who aim their anger inside. I find too many people who say "sorry" for everything, even when it is the other person's fault. We may use this unconscious strategy to protect relationships by not expressing anger ─ thus "saving" the relationship, be it a personal one, or with a co-worker or boss. Don't punish yourself. Don't tell yourself that you are wrong when you're not.

The calorie argument claims that, based on weight, age, and several other variables, we each need a specific number of calories per day. To lose, gain, or maintain weight in this model, you have two variables: calories consumed and calories expended. According to this theory, to lose weight we simply eat less and move more. To gain weight, we move less and eat more. If we followed this simplified formula, we could eat Twinkies all day and run those calories off on a treadmill. However, common sense tells us this is not health. Sure, counting calories can help some people move in the right direction by eliminating the most egregious diet offenders, but for those who are serious about being healthy, simply counting calories doesn't make the cut. Counting calories does not help manage appetite or eliminate cravings, and these can be serious impediments to weight loss. It also doesn't help manage or reverse diseases. We need a more holistic model.

When a treatment goes wrong at a U.S. hospital, fear of a lawsuit usually means "never daring to say you're sorry." However, lawyers and doctors say admitting mistakes immediately and offering compensation before being sued have brought about remarkable savings in money, time, and feelings. According to Harvard Medical School Dean Dr. Joan Reede, patients and their families can find great relief and comfort when a doctor promptly admits an error. She learned this personally when her mother nearly died from a medical error in 1998. Her mother spent eight weeks in a hospital after hip surgery when doctors at first failed to spot a severe allergic reaction despite warnings from her medically trained daughter. "There was an apology from the surgeon," Joan Reede said. "When you get what you consider to be a sincere apology, you always feel better," said her mother, now 79, who didn't sue.

The pedagogical tradition of requiring students to raise their hands in class has the obvious instrumental purposes of establishing classroom order, testing student comprehension of content by maintaining a disciplined climate conducive to answering questions, and facilitating group discussion. Morally, however, it regulates turn-taking which inevitably involves issues of fairness, respect for others, patience, and self-control. How a teacher navigates in such routine situations is ethically significant. Thoughtlessly done, it may project the image of a teacher who discriminates, favours, or just does not care about students. Thoughtfully carried out, turn-taking may enable the teacher to ensure fair participation as well as protect both the less vocal students who may need some gentle and kindly encouragement and the more vocal ones who may become targeted for abuse by other students who grow to resent them.

Stress is a hot topic in American culture today. Its popularity stems from the need to get a handle on this condition ─ to deal with stress effectively enough so as to lead a “normal” and happy life. But dealing with stress is a process, not an outcome. Many people’s attitudes, influenced by their rushed lifestyles and expectations of immediate satisfaction, reflect the need to eliminate stress rather than to manage, reduce, or control their perceptions of it. As a result, stress never really goes away; it just reappears with a new face. A bit of reflection will reveal that this is inevitable. Stressful life events, from choosing a major or changing jobs to having a child or losing a family member, will continue to occur throughout any fulfilling life. Dealing with them, not avoiding or ignoring them, is the only solution. For those who refuse this advice, studies show that real bodily harm in the form of heart disease or cancer is the likely outcome.

Since humans are also animals, arguably much can be gained from learning about the nature of animal warfare ─ especially the roles of dominance and activity. Much research has followed close observations of humanity’s closest relatives, the primates, but that does not imply that all that can be learned from animals applies to human action. Similarities and analogies can be applied, especially in the tactical methods of warfare, including the chase, deception, camouflage, encirclement, and so on, that animals have evolved and which humans try to mimic. Nevertheless, the human mind also generates purposes, intentions, concepts, and explicit understandings unknown in the animal kingdom (e.g., the suicide bomber). This remains true even if trial-and-error processes in man’s military strategy converge on or mimic strategies that have evolved in the natural kingdom.

A copyright owner may transfer the entire copyright or any part of it to another person, or may grant limited permission to others to copy the work. The transfer of all the exclusive rights in a copyright is commonly known as an assignment. It must be made in writing and be signed by the copyright owner or the owner’s agent. Once the rights are assigned, the party who receives the assignment is entitled to all of the protection and remedies accorded to the copyright owner by the statute. This means that the assignee can give permission to others to copy the work and enforce against infringements. The party that assigns the copyright relinquishes its rights altogether. For example, a writer who assigns all rights to an article to a magazine can no longer grant permission to others to use the text or sue parties who reproduce the work without his or her permission.

Technological innovation has affected the lives of people in myriad ways. The emergence of a primitive hunting technology involving simple tools was the first great technological advance. This was followed by agricultural developments that led to plant cultivation, which had far-reaching social consequences, since now food could be stored and refilled. Thus, population size was no longer partially controlled by the lack of food resources. Because hunting and gathering societies required physical mobility, it was inefficient to have large numbers of children to take along in the search for food. As a result of the agricultural revolution, however, agriculturists, living in settled communities, found additional children beneficial in helping with chores. Moreover, some members of agricultural societies were now free to engage in pursuits other than food gathering, resulting in a more elaborate social structure with a division of labor that allowed for occupational specialization.

Social psychologist Jack Brehm asked housewives to rate how much they liked a series of household items, such as coffee makers and toasters. For each woman, he took items that she ranked as equally attractive, told her that she could take one of them home, and allowed her to choose. After the choice, each woman was asked to re-rate the items. Brehm found that the ranking of the chosen item went up and the ranking of the others dropped. There is a simple demonstration of this tendency, the sort one can do in a bar. Take three identical things, such as coasters, and put two of them in front of your subject. Ask him to choose between them. Once he chooses, hand over the chosen object, then bring out the third, and now ask him to choose between the rejected object and the new one. What you’ll tend to find is that the rejected object has dropped in value ─ it is tainted by not having been chosen the first time around, and so the tendency here is to choose the new object. Nobody really knows why this happens. Perhaps it has to do with self-enhancement; we want to feel good about ourselves, and so we pump up the value of our choices and denigrate the road not taken. Or maybe it is an evolved mental trick to make repeated hard decisions easier ─ once you choose between two close options, your choice will make the difference between the options seem bigger, making it an easier choice in the future. A third proposal is self-perception theory. We assess our own choices as if they were done by another person, and so when I observe myself choosing A over B, I draw the same conclusion that I would if someone else made this choice ─ A is probably better than B.
