After all the work you have gone through writing it, you may feel "married" to the first draft of your paper. However, revision is one of the most important steps in ensuring your paper's success. Although unpracticed writers often think of revision as little more than making sure all the i's are dotted and t's are crossed, it is much more than that. Revising is re-seeing the essay, looking at it from other perspectives, trying always to align your view with the one that will be held by your audience. Research indicates that we are actually revising all the time, in every phase of the writing process, as we reread phrases, rethink the placement of an item in an outline, or test a new topic sentence for a paragraph. Subjecting your entire hard-fought draft to cold, objective scrutiny is one of the toughest activities to master, but it is absolutely necessary. You have to ensure that you have said everything that needs to be said clearly and logically. One confusing passage will deflect the reader's attention from where you want it to be.

In a recent study, researchers compared two groups of volunteers who consumed 90 grams of protein each day, primarily in the form of lean beef. One group ate 30 grams of protein at each meal, while the other group ate 10 grams at breakfast, 15 grams at lunch, and 65 grams at dinner. The volunteers who consumed the evenly distributed protein meals had a twenty-four-hour muscle protein synthesis 25 percent greater than those subjects who ate according to the skewed protein distribution pattern. Better muscle synthesis means a more efficient utilization of calories, and less protein being oxidized and ending up as glucose or fat. So balancing your protein intake throughout the day is key. Add an egg, a glass of mixed vegetable juice, Greek yogurt, or a handful of nuts to get closer to 30 grams of protein in the morning. Do something similar to get to 30 grams for your midday meal, and then consume no more than 30 grams of protein for dinner. Many of my patients are in the best shape of their lives after fifty by simply bringing back the balance that helps them shed the fat, build muscle, and look younger.

International maritime codes specify that more maneuverable vessels must keep out of the way of less maneuverable vessels. The captains of more maneuverable vessels, such as power-driven boats, are responsible for avoiding less steerable vessels, such as sailing ships, and ships engaged in fishing, and vessels not under command. It is easier for powerboats to avoid hitting sailing ships than vice versa. Aviation codes are based on the same principle. The right of way of the sky ranks craft in order of the ease with which they can be controlled. Airplanes in normal operation, which are the most easily maneuvered aircraft, have the lowest priority in right of way. Airplanes refueling other aircraft, which are less easily maneuvered, have a greater right of way than airplanes in normal operation. Balloons, which are still more difficult to maneuver than airplanes refueling other aircraft, have a higher priority right of way. Finally, aircraft in distress have the highest priority right of way of all, since an aircraft in distress is very difficult or impossible to control.

So far we've overlooked a very important contributor to logical thinking (as well as memory and physical and mental performance in general): emotions. Certainly they play a huge role in physical performance. To appreciate this, play a few solitary rounds of darts. Note your performance. Now position a picture of one of your children or a child known to you on the bull's-eye of the board and start again. In the original study testing this rather grim situation, most people were hard-pressed to hit the child's photo ― especially if it was of their own child ― despite their recognition that it was only a picture. In other words, full intellectual recognition of the distinction between reality and image wasn't sufficient to offset the reluctance to throw a sharp instrument at an image of their child. Most people are similarly reluctant to tear up a piece of paper with a loved one's name written on it.

Text communication does create problems, even for people who are skilled at it. Lacking sounds and visuals, it is not a rich sensory encounter. You cannot see other people's faces or hear them speak. All the important interpersonal cues provided by voice, body language, and physical appearance disappear, which can dramatically alter how people relate to each other. Without those cues, it is easier to misunderstand the other person. Your online companion might be sick, drunk, or depressed without your knowing it. For some people, the lack of physical presence generated by the cues of voice and appearance might reduce the sense of intimacy and trust. Typed text feels formal, distant, unemotional, and lacking a supportive and empathic tone. In fact, without a visual and auditory connection, you can never be absolutely certain about the other person's identity. This absence of face-to-face cues, which adds a little anonymity, encourages some people to behave inappropriately.

Learn to express what you want rather than putting the emphasis on what you don't want when speaking with a child. Children are highly responsive to the messages they receive. If an adult says, "Don't slam the door," the child listening hears the phrase "slam the door," with the word "don't" in front of it. The child must figure out that slamming the door is the undesirable thing to do, which is difficult to comprehend, especially for young children. The chances for a successful response from a child increase dramatically when an adult says, "Please close the door gently." Now the child has a visual image to follow. The words spoken fit together well with the request, which makes it much easier to understand.

Fear is directly linked with desire. The stronger we desire something, the more intensely we fear losing it. Urged by various instincts, we strongly want, desire, and need both material and immaterial things. These range from life itself and the presence of loved ones to wanting fame, fortune, power, prestige, love, arts, sports, and so on. Each of these provides us with a different sort of pleasure and satisfaction, and life becomes richer and highly desirable, and the thought of losing these objects strikes fear in our hearts. Depending on which we cherish the most, we fear losing that the most intensely. Death, in particular, puts an end to these attachments and their related joys, and thus, people normally fear death the most.

When it comes to statistical significance, the size of the groups being compared matters. For instance, a poll of ten athletic friends and ten couch potato friends could give you some insight into whether knee problems were associated with participation in sports. However, if five of the athletes and two of the couch potatoes complained of knee pain, would this be good evidence that knee pain is related to participation in sports? Not really, because with such small group sizes, the difference easily could have arisen by chance. On the other hand, if 1,000 athletes and 1,000 couch potatoes were randomly selected and polled, and 500 of the athletes and 200 of the nonathletes had knee pain, this would be much stronger evidence that a correlation existed between knee pain and participation in sports. With such a large sample size, the 50 percent/20 percent statistic could not be due to a few unusual people throwing off the result, as could have been the case with the smaller group.

When we discuss knowledge, we often focus on theoretical 'knowledge of the head' and overlook practical 'knowledge of the hand.' Indeed, there seems to be something of a prejudice against the latter. For example, the abstract knowledge of the scientist is generally held in higher esteem than the practical knowledge of the car mechanic or the craftsman. This prejudice may derive from the widespread assumption that our capacity for reason is what distinguishes us from the rest of the animal kingdom. However, it could be argued that our ability to manipulate things is just as unique, and that the hand with its opposable thumb is as good a symbol of human intelligence as the head with its bulging cranium. Indeed, there is a sense in which know-how is prior to, and more fundamental than, know-that. After all, we need basic skills, such as the ability to speak and the ability to manipulate objects, before we can acquire any kind of knowledge.

Think about the way HDTV and online video-sharing sites have changed the basic rules of their respective platforms. Going from analog television to HDTV is a change in degree, not in kind: there are more pixels, and the colors are sharper. But consumers watch HDTV the exact same way they watched old-fashioned analog TV. They choose a channel and watch. Online video-sharing sites, on the other hand, radically altered the basic rules of the medium. For starters, they made watching video on the Web a mass phenomenon. But with those sites, you weren't limited to sitting and watching a show, television-style; you could also upload your own clips, recommend or rate other clips, or even take a clip running on someone else's site and drop a copy of it onto your own site. This allowed ordinary enthusiasts to effectively program their own private television networks!
