Just as people do not stand idly by and let random situations happen to them, so social situations do not let every person enter them. The choice between West Point and Berkeley is only available to students who performed well in high school and on college entrance exams. For many situations, a person needs certain characteristics to enter. The high school freshman who is taller than average may be recruited for basketball training, for example, whereas a friend who is better than average at mathematics and sciences may be recruited for honors classes. And small initial differences between people may get even larger as situations (such as basketball training sessions and honors classes) exaggerate them. At the end of their senior year, the differences between the students are likely to be much greater than they were originally. Thus, situation and person mutually shape and choose one another in a continuing cycle.

There’s no denying the fact that chaos doesn’t make it easy to think logically. However, if you exert some willpower and force yourself to examine the situation without emotions clouding your judgment, you might discover new opportunities in the middle of chaos. For example, if you’re on a diet and somehow one cheat meal turned into a week-long session of bad food choices, you might conclude that everything is lost and give up. It’s the easy choice, but not the right one. Treated correctly, the chaos that has emerged in your diet can offer opportunities. Perhaps you could jot down the thoughts you have when you gorge on unhealthy food after a long period of going without it. If you’ve been following a healthy diet for several weeks, you can probably also notice the difference in how you feel after eating junk food. The social lives of numerous animals are strongly shaped by affiliative and cooperative behavior. Consider wolves. For a long time researchers thought that pack size was regulated by available food resources. Wolves typically feed on animals such as elk and moose, both of which are bigger than an individual wolf. Successfully hunting such large animals usually takes more than one wolf, so it makes sense to suppose that wolf packs evolved because of the size of wolves’ food. However, long-term research by David Mech shows that pack size in wolves is regulated by social and not food-related factors. Mech discovered that the number of wolves who can live together in a coordinated pack is governed by the number of wolves with whom individuals can closely bond balanced against the number of individuals from whom an individual can tolerate competition. Packs and their codes of conduct break down when there are too many wolves.

There are certain compelling features of the imagination. Fictional people tend to be wittier and more clever than friends and family, and their adventures are usually much more interesting. My real world doesn’t include an emotionally wounded cop tracking down a serial killer, a shoplifter with a heart of gold, or a wisecracking vampire. But all of those people can be met in imaginary worlds. The technologies of the imagination provide any sensitive or private information that is impossible to get in the real world. A novel can span birth to death and can show you how the person behaves in situations that you could never otherwise observe. In reality you can never truly know what a person is thinking; in a story, the writer can tell you. Such psychic intimacy isn’t limited to the written word. There are conventions in other artistic mediums that have been created for the same purpose. A character in a play might turn to the audience and begin a dramatic monologue that expresses what he or she is thinking. In a musical, the thoughts might be sung; on television and in the movies, a voice-over may be used. This is common now, but it must have been a revelation when the technique was first invented, and I wonder what young children think when they come across this for the first time, when they hear someone else’s thoughts expressed aloud. It must be thrilling.
