Gifted children see the world through a lens that is simply different from that of most people. The brighter and more creative they are, the more likely they are to see things differently. Adults should remember that these children, however, are initially unaware that they see the world differently than how others do. Since they have grown up seeing the world through their eyes, their way of thinking is normal to them, and they believe that everyone should be able to see things the same way they do. A five-year-old gifted child is genuinely surprised to discover that other children in kindergarten do not know how to read. She has trouble believing it and may think the others just aren't trying. Or a 10-year-old who can so easily see two chess moves ahead simply cannot understand why his friend doesn't see the steps necessary to checkmate and win the game.

In an experiment, psychologist James W. Pennebaker and his colleagues asked 50 college students to write about their own personal experience of anger or what they were going to do after the experiment was over. They wrote for 20 minutes daily for four days. The researchers measured a variety of things, including blood pressure, immune function, and heart rate. The subjects themselves kept daily records of physical symptoms and moods. The researchers also collected information on health visits to the campus infirmary five months before and six weeks after the experiment. During the daily writing sessions, those who dug into their psyches had a more robust immune response, and made significantly fewer visits to the campus infirmary. "People showing the greatest improvements are those who wrote about emotional upheavals that they had actively held back in telling others," Pennebaker said. "The failure to manage anger forces the person to live with it in an unresolved matter."

Apparently, the fact that print does not physically resemble the things and events it symbolizes makes it easier to separate its content from the real world. Thus, as many have feared, television, with its presentation of live action, is a more tempting medium in transforming fantasy into reality. But what is a negative effect in the presentation of fiction can be a positive one in the presentation of fact. Television can be an extremely compelling medium for teaching children about the real world. In Scandinavia it was found that if eleven-year-olds learn of the same news event from television, parents, teachers, and the newspaper, the majority will rely primarily on television. They consider television the best-informed medium, and they say that on television "you can see for yourself what is happening."

Long before any recorded human history, our ancestors lived in a world filled with life-threatening dangers: predators, hunger, toxic plants, unfriendly neighbors, heights, disease, drowning. It was in the face of these dangers that the human mind evolved. The qualities necessary to avoid danger were the qualities that evolution bred into us as human beings. A good many of those qualities amounted simply to different forms of caution. Fear was protective; one had to be cautious about many things to survive. This cautiousness persists in our present psychological makeup in the form of some of our deepest hatreds and fears. These fears are remnants ─ we owe a great deal to their existence.

Drawing on their experience in using operant conditioning to train animals for circuses, TV, and film stunts, Kellar Breland and Marian Breland described a number of situations in which their attempts to condition an animal's behavior ran head-on into the animal's built-in instincts. For example, according to the theory of operant conditioning, rewarding a behavior should increase its frequency. However, when the Brelands attempted to train a raccoon to drop two coins in a piggy bank by rewarding this response with food, the raccoon did not cooperate. After the raccoon was rewarded with food for dropping two coins into the bank, it took the next two coins and began rubbing them together, just as they do to remove the shells of newly caught crayfish. Eventually, the coin-rubbing response overpowered the coin-dropping response, and the Brelands had to abandon their attempt to condition the raccoon. The Brelands used this and other examples to emphasize the importance of biologically programmed behavior.

Retracted postures lessen heat loss to the environment by decreasing the surface area available to exchange heat. They are favored when surrounding temperature is much colder than body temperature. The same types of postural adjustments are seen in the heat. Extended postures increase heat loss by increasing the surface area of the body exposed to the environment. They are useful to dissipate heat when the environment is hot but still below the body temperature. However, body extension does not work when surrounding temperature is warmer than body temperature, because heat accumulates faster. Hence, physiological strategies, such as sweating, must be called into play.

It was included as a giveaway in packs of cigarettes back in the early 1900s when Wagner was still playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Although Wagner was one of the all-time greats of baseball, only a small number of the cards were ever issued because he denied the tobacco companies the right to use his image. Popular legend is that Wagner did this after recognizing that the cards appealed to young boys and encouraged them to smoke. Why do some in society always want more? One obvious answer is the boredom of comfort. In a rich economy, material comfort is easily achieved. The pleasure of satisfying the simple wants, so difficult to do in a poor society, is removed. Every day is a feast day. Tensions are aroused by only the new and the novel. In an otherwise boring world, stimulation and arousal are sought through new and novel consumption experiences. Once incorporated into daily routines, the novelty of new consumer items wears off and the pleasure of acquiring and making use of them diminishes. Playing a new computer game sparks arousal and creates tension; learning to play the game and succeeding at it brings the pleasure of tension reduction. As the experience is repeated, the level of arousal diminishes, and so does pleasure.
