Sleep is essentially a time-management adaptation. Our body’s internal clock evolved to keep us out of circulation when there’s not much of a living to be made ─ at 3 A.M., for instance ─ and awake when there is. Consider the brown bat, perhaps the longest sleeping mammal of them all. It sleeps twenty hours a day and spends the other four, at dusk, hunting mosquitoes and moths. Why only four hours at dusk? Because that’s when food is plentiful. But also because, as Jerome Siegel, a neuroscientist at UCLA, says, “increased waking time would seem to be highly maladaptive for this animal, since it would expend energy and be exposed to predatory birds with better vision and better flight abilities.” Siegel argues that our obsession with sleep quality and duration is, in a sense, backward. “We spend a third of our life sleeping, which seems so maladaptive ─ ‘the biggest mistake nature has made,’ scientists often call it,” he told me. “Another way of looking at it is that unnecessary wakefulness is a bigger mistake.”

In one experiment, students were required to wear an embarrassing T-shirt (one sporting a large image of Barry Manilow ─ a popular singer but of low prestige among college students) before entering a room in which a group of their peers were assembled. The scientists noted in their paper that ‘all participants nonetheless put on the shirt, although none looked particularly thrilled about doing so’. The wearer of the T-shirt was later asked to estimate the number of fellow students in the crowded room who definitely discerned the face on the shirt, and this was compared with the actual number who had noticed. In fact, the students were so consumed with their own embarrassment over wearing the clothes that they were unable to accurately gauge how conspicuous it was to others. The T-shirt wearers overestimated how many others spotted the embarrassing shirt on average by a factor of two.

We often hear the expression “music is the universal language.” By this people mean that even if two people do not speak each other’s language, they can at least appreciate music together. But like so many popular sayings, this one is only partially true. Although all people do have the same physiological mechanisms for hearing, what a person actually hears is influenced by his or her culture. Westerners tend to miss much of the richness of Javanese and Sri Lankan music because they have not been conditioned to hear it. Whenever we encounter a piece of non-Western music, we hear it (process it) in terms of our own culturally influenced set of musical categories involving scale, melody, pitch, harmony, and rhythm. And because those categories are defined differently from culture to culture, the appreciation of music across cultures is not always ensured.

From a medical standpoint, health is viewed as an attribute of the individual. The fields of medicine and public health have traditionally acknowledged environmental causes of illness and assigned risk to specific exposures. In the past decade, biologists, ecologists, and physicians have also developed a concept of ecosystem health. This idea recognizes that humans are participants in complex ecosystems and that their potential for health is proportional to the health function of those ecosystems. An ecosystem-based health perspective takes into account the health-related services that the natural environment provides (e.g., soil production, pollination, and water cleansing) and acknowledges the fundamental connection between a healthy environment and human health. An ecosystem health stance is a nonanthropocentric, holistic world view increasingly shared by biological scientists.

Caring for those who lack the ability to care for themselves is among the most praiseworthy of activities. Nevertheless, there are times when attempting to give care can actually be damaging to physical and mental health. Researchers have carefully studied those who are full-time caregivers for chronically ill or disabled loved ones, and discovered several things. For instance, caregivers of spouses with Alzheimer's disease show depression levels that are three times greater than the average person's. It seems that the constant burden of caregiving coupled with a lack of emotional support from others can be nearly unmanageable. For caregivers who suffer from disabilities of their own, the picture is even darker, and many elderly caregivers find themselves in this position ─ caring for a spouse who is severely ill while neglecting their own health. For such caregivers, it can be nearly impossible to find time for rest and basic personal maintenance.

Like adults, young children expect names to refer to objects that share deep hidden properties. Susan Gelman once showed her 13-month-old son a button on her shirt and called it "button." He then started to press it, because, though it didn't look much like a button on his electronic toys, he knew what category it belonged to, and that's what you do with a button. For older children, you get the same subtle appreciation of the force of a noun that you find in adults. One four-year-old made the point when describing a violent playmate: "Gabriel didn't just hurt me! He hurt other kids, too! He's a hurter! Right, Mom? He's a hurter!" The child is presumably stressing that this sort of behavior reflects a deeper aspect of Gabriel's nature. And in an experimental work, Gelman told five-year-olds about a child named Rose who often eats carrots, and added, for half of the children: "She is a carrot-eater." This name has an effect; it caused those children to think of Rose as a more permanent eater of carrots ─ she will eat them in the future, even if her family discourages it. It is part of her nature.

Perhaps the most influential in determining authenticity of souvenirs is the meaning that the tourists themselves assign to their merchandise through a process of attribution of meaning. For most people, 'buying a souvenir is an act of acquisition of an object perceived as authentic'. However, according to a study, the perception of the souvenir vendors was that tourists really do not care if the design is traditional or contrived. The study concludes it is obvious that tourists understand that artificial and non-destination-specific items (e.g. stone chess sets, brass cigarette lighters, etc.) are not part of the craft tradition of local cultures, but rather such items are made specifically for tourists. Nonetheless, the souvenirs tourists take home are still a sort of trophy, which must reflect their image of the country visited ─ it must look authentic, traditional, or primitive, because the authenticity of the artifact is a guarantee of the authenticity of one's experience abroad.

One warm spring day, a tennis coach was working with a student on the art of serving the ball. While the student tossed and hit the ball over and over again, the coach directed his attention toward each part of the student's motion and swing. The coach never criticized the student for his mistakes, but instead gave feedback after each hit about the position of the racquet, the height of the ball toss, the angle of the racquet as it hit the ball, and the student's motion during the racquet follow-through. In tennis, the ball needs to land in a service square to count as a successful hit. Yet remarkably, the coach never once checked to see where the ball landed after the student's serve. Instead, the coach focused his feedback exclusively on ways to improve each part of the student's service stroke. The coach was confident that once the student learned each of the relevant skills, the student would be able to combine them so that the ball would consistently reach the target area.

While science and technology are closely related, they are not the same. It is not necessary to have a true scientific understanding of something to develop a technology that works. Trial and error, treating things as black boxes in which the result is known but the process that produces the result is not understood, is sufficient to develop many forms of technology. Sometimes, however, a revolution in scientific understanding is needed to conceive of new technologies. Such was the shift Einstein brought to physics when he proved matter and energy were interchangeable, which opened up the possibilities of nuclear power. A similar revolution has occurred in biology, with the understanding that living organisms grow and develop through the expression of genes, encoded in DNA, which are built from the same four building blocks. This understanding allows us to conceive of ways to re-engineer living organisms and gives rise to genetic engineering and other aspects of modern biotechnology, such as cloning and genomics.

Kawamura, a graduate student at Showa Women's University, documented communications exchanged by a group of thirty who were organizing a party at a bar. "As the date grew nearer, the frequency of messages increased. But only four people showed up on time at the agreed place," Kawamura said. However, dozens of others stayed in touch through voice and text messages while they trickled in. "Kids have become loose about time and place. If you have a phone, you can be late," added Kawamura. Kamide, another graduate student, agreed that it is no longer taboo to show up late: "Today's taboo," Kamide presumed, "is to forget your mobile phone or let your battery die." Later it was discovered that this "softening of time" was noted for the same age group in Norway. "The opportunity to make decisions on the spot has made young people reluctant to divide their lives into time slots, as older generations are used to doing," agreed a Norwegian researcher.
