Joni went horseback riding with her older sisters. She had a hard time keeping up with them because her pony was half the size of their horses. Her sisters, on their big horses, thought it was exciting to cross the river at the deepest part. They never seemed to notice that Joni’s little pony sank a bit deeper. It had rained earlier that week and the river was brown and swollen. As her pony walked into the middle of the river, Joni turned pale, staring at the swirling waters rushing around the legs of her pony. Her heart started to race and her mouth became dry.

On my first day in the Emergency Center, I was about to drink my coffee when the first call came. I quickly picked up the line, “9-1-1.” My voice was trembling and my heart was racing. A woman cried, “My husband’s not breathing!” I instructed her to begin CPR. I was trying to be as steady as I could, but I was shaking. The situation was absolutely critical. While she was performing CPR, I immediately notified the nearby hospital. After a few tense moments, she came back on the line and shouted, “Where’s the ambulance?” I replied, “It’s getting there as quickly as it can.”

As often as he could, after his classes were over and his work at the Footes’ was done, he returned to the university. Sometimes, in the evenings, he wandered in the long open quadrangle, among couples who strolled together and murmured softly; though he did not know any of them, and though he did not speak to them, he felt a kinship with them. Sometimes he stood in the center of the quadrangle, looking at the five huge columns in front of Jesse Hall that thrust upward into the night out of the cool grass; he had learned that these columns were the remains of the original main building of the university, destroyed many years ago by fire. Grayish silver in the moonlight, bare and pure, they seemed to him to represent the way of life he had embraced, as a temple represents a god.

Last summer I went to get groceries and unconsciously bought much more than I could easily carry. I couldn’t afford a taxi, so I was shuffling along, stopping every few feet because the bags were heavy. At one point the bottom fell out of one of them and some of my groceries were ruined. I managed to save what I could and kept going. When I was about ten minutes from my apartment, an elderly lady pulled over to put a letter in a mailbox. She offered to give me a drive. At first, I politely refused, as it was not that far away, but she insisted. I offered her some money for the lift but she refused, and said she was just happy that she could help. The lady showed me there are still people willing to help those in need.

The windows were open in the big bedroom and fading orange sunlight cast long shadows across the walls. The statue of Emily stood in the corner of the room, frozen and helpless. Corey sat beside her, his jaw set tightly and his tense face made him look a bit like a statue himself. Grue was here too, sitting in a corner, watching Grandma silently and it looked like he might have been crying. Grandma lay on a big bed in the center of the room. Her white hair was lit by the golden light of the setting sun. Her skin was a sickly grey and her breathing was shallow. I had always thought of Grandma as nearly invincible, but now she looked heartbreakingly fragile and weak. Grandpa sat in a chair beside the bed. When he saw us, he embraced Elayne and me and didn’t let go for a long time. I finally began crying and the three of us sobbed quietly holding each other tightly.
6번 지문
We took the floor for warm-ups and we were all flying high. The Knights were already warming up and they looked pretty confident. During the national anthem I felt like I was going to throw up. I could feel my heart pounding in my chest. I was at this point more than a little worried about this game. Would we be able to match them on their home court? Was Tony going to keep his cool? Was I going to play well? So many questions. So many things to worry about. I tried to take some advice Coach Doug had given me once: when it comes time to play the game, leave all your problems off the court and play ball. Finally the game began with the whistle blown by the referee.
